A reported crisis is said to be emerging within the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the selection of individuals to fill available positions in both the National Working Committee (NWC) and the zonal leadership of the party.
During a media briefing, the National Secretary of the party, Ajibola Basiru, revealed the results of the NWC meeting held at the APC National Secretariat and the subsequent election of new officials.
Among the newly elected officials, Ali Bukar Dalori (from Borno State) is set to assume the role of deputy national chairman for the North (North East Zone), taking over from Abubakar Kyari, who was previously the Minister of Agriculture. Similarly, Garba Datti Muhammad (from Kaduna State) is slated to replace Salihu Moh Lukman as the national vice chairman for the North West (North West Zone).
Ajibola disclosed that the NWC chose Abdul Karim Abubakar Kana (from Nasarawa State) for the position of national legal adviser, representing the North Central Zone, as a replacement for his predecessor who had resigned.
He also introduced Donatus Nwankpa (from Abia State) as the new national welfare secretary for the South East Zone, succeeding the late Friday Nwosu. Additionally, Mary Alile Idele from Edo State emerged as the national women leader for the South-South region.
In terms of other appointments, the ruling party decided on Duro Meseko (from Kogi State) to take on the role of deputy national publicity secretary for the North Central Zone, replacing Yakubu Ajaka. Simultaneously, Ikani Shuaibu Okolo (also from Kogi State) was selected for the position of zonal organizing secretary for the North Central Zone.
However, the announcement of the elected officers from Abia, Kogi, and Cross River States seems to have the potential to cause an unwelcome crisis within the party.
According to Daily Sun, prominent party leaders such as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Beta Edu, who had previously endorsed Dr. Stella Odey-Ekpo, allegedly faced defeat against the candidate supported by Adams Oshiomhole.
Furthermore, the candidate supported by Governor Yahaya Bello reportedly lost to James Faleke’s candidate for the position of deputy national publicity secretary.
Concerning Abia State, it was also alleged that the candidates recommended by both the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and the State Chairman, Ikechi Emenike, were defeated by the candidate backed by Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Due to these outcomes, it was gathered that the former woman leader, Edu, made a protest at the national secretariat around 6.20 pm, expressing dissatisfaction with the removal of her candidate, who had already begun assuming the role.
