WE LEAD NIGERIA STATEMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
This year’s International Women’s Day centers on sustainability and building a greener society. Achieving a greener society cuts across various parts and most especially the lives of women and girls. To celebrate today is to recognize the interconnectedness between gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights and climate change. Evidently, Nigeria’s climate has been changing: increases in temperature; variable rainfall; rise in sea level and flooding; drought and desertification; land degradation; more frequent extreme weather events; affected fresh water resources and loss of biodiversity.
Climate change issues have negative impacts on maternal health and create conditions that result in increases in gender-based violence, including harmful practices such as child marriage especially in displaced communities. In particular, adolescents; sex workers; people living with disabilities; and those of underrepresented sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) face significant barriers in accessing SRHR information and services, including in climate change ecosystem.
Today, We Lead Community of Action in Nigeria recognizes the need for an establised dedicated network of actors focusing on SRHR and climate change for improved dialogue, collaboration, approaches, and processes.
March 8 every year has been set aside by the United Nations as International Women’s Day. A day set aside to reflect and commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focus point for the women’s right movements in Nigeria and all over the world to address some of the challenges women face such as gender inequality, lack of reproductive justice, economic inequality, political exclusion, education parity, violence against women and girls amongst others.
The IWD 2022 with the theme for this year as “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” tends to focus on highlighting the contributions of women and girls around the globe and their participation in their communities towards promoting climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, as a means of building a more sustainable future for all.
About We Lead Nigeria
We Lead is a new, inspiring, innovative and far-reaching program aiming to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRH-R) of young women. It focuses on four specific groups of young women: those who live with HIV, who have a disability, who identify as lesbian, bisexual, trans, or intersex, and who are affected by displacement. The program puts young women rightsholders in the driving seat while supporting them to impactful and sustainably advocate for their SRH-R. The We Lead consortium consists of six civil society organizations (Positive Vibes, Restless Development, Marsa, FEMNET, the Central American Women’s Fund, Hivos).
The We Lead is currently being implemented in Nigeria by a Community of Action (COA) of 11 organizations. The COA will support in developing and implementing strategies to shift social and gender norms – starting with their direct environment and gradually reaching the general public. We Lead Nigeria will help rightsholders influence SRH-R service providers to improve their access to SRH-R information and services and support them in lobbying duty bearers to change laws and policies in favor of rightsholders’ SRH-R.

Front line APC aspirant for Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency ahead of 2023, Dr Elkanah Garang has received a boost to his aspiration. A high-powered delegation led by prominent grass root stakeholders has reportedly Interfaced with all the 14 Federal and 20 State Ward Chairmen on Thursday in Bokkos to seek their support for the aspiration of Dr Elkanah Garang who is aspiring to represent Bokkos and Mangu in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly.
Eyewitnesses present at the event have revealed that the chairman of Chairmen Mr Mangut Mutong (ChoCho) speaking at the gathering, recounted how Dr Elkanah has imprinted himself in Bokkos and beyond, stressing that everyone is aware of how the aspirant has massively impacted communities by providing water, equipping healthcare facilities, giving scholarships and assistance to the less privilege and many more.
Chocho gave the assurance that the candidate if given the opportunity will definitely do more for the people of the Federal Constituency.
Other Chairmen also spoke highly of the aspirant and expressed appreciation for the efforts he has made in their various communities to bring succour to the people. They expressed support for his aspiration and praised his community development philosophy as what the people desire and crave for.
Mr Sati on behalf of the group thanked all the ward chairmen and stakeholders for their individual and collectively solidarity and assured them of an incoming vibrant and people-centred representation.
A mother has confessed to having sex with her biological son just to have a baby for her husband.
Matina Agawua, a native of Yelwata, in Nasarawa State lost her first husband to herdsmen attack in Northern Nigeria. Her first marriage produced a son.
She remarried years after the death of her husband but had difficulties having a child with her second husband, Mr James.
After six years of marriage with no child, Matina started getting pressured by her mother-in-law and her current husband to have a child or the marriage will be over.
Matina’s husband threatened to take a new wife and this bothered Matina because she and her husband had contributed money to build the house they live in, with Matina providing a greater share. It troubled Matina to have another woman living in the house she built with her husband.
As a result, Matina decided to have sex with her teenage son from her first marriage to see if she could have a child for her second husband.
“We had been married for more than six years but were still childless due to my husband’s fault, according to doctor’s report, and I was hearing from the grapevine that he was planning to take a second wife on the grounds that I could not give him a child,” Matina told The Nation.
Matina told the publication that she had undergone a test on her own since her husband refused to go for one, and the result showed that there was nothing wrong with her medically.
To prove that she is fertile, she decided to lure her own son, a student in Akwanga, into a secret affair, while warning him to keep it secret.
She told The Nation: “Since he is not comfortable with us going for medical checkup on the assumption that nothing was wrong with him, I decided to convince my little son, who is just about 16 years old and schooling in Akwanga.
“I visited him regularly. He stays in a private apartment with my relatives, so I was going there to spend some time with them, especially on weekends when my market is off.
“It was actually difficult making love with my own son, but circumstances forced me to go into it. I needed to be sure of my fertility.
“I know my husband very well. If he discovered I had an affair with a man outside, he would kill me.
“I love him so much and I’m afraid of him; so this evil plan kept ringing in my mind to know how fertile I am.
“I tried to visit my son in Akwanga mostly; when I was on my ovulation period. I decided to develop a crush on him and draw him very close to me. We got intimate and ended up having sex.
“One faithful day while I was on my ovulation period, I visited him. It was at about 11pm. I held his hand and made him sit beside me.
“I asked him if he had ever had sex; and he said no. I held him in my arms. This time, I felt warm and I think he too did.
“After that night, I felt extremely embarrassed, and guilty that I committed such an abomination with my own son.
“It was actually a taboo, but I warned him to keep it secret.”
Matina said that prior to having sex with her son, she didn’t have sex with her husband for three months.
After intercourse with her son in Jan 2022, she said she missed her period that same month and a test confirmed she was pregnant.
However, when she shared the news with her husband, he suspected foul play. He reminded her that they have not had sex for three months and insisted he is not responsible for the pregnancy.
Mr .James accused Matina of adultery and threatened to kill her, so she confessed to having sex with her son.
Matina’s son was questioned and he confessed to the sex act with his mother.
Matina told the publication: “I am not a loose woman. I am just a woman who loves her husband very much; and didn’t want to hurt or lose him.
“I did what I did to save my marriage. I got reliable information that he was planning to take a second wife; on the advice of his parents and that the wife would occupy one of the apartments we suffered to build together.
“I was not comfortable with that idea; and felt I could test my fertility with my son and impose it on him.
“I did that to get him a child and to stop him from taking a second wife. Taking a second wife is an indirect way of pushing me away, losing all we have suffered to put together.
“Look at my age. I’m not getting younger and my husband was not prepared to address the matter medically.
“Look at the result of the test; it shows low sperm count. There is no way he would have been able to impregnate me.
“I know I was doing the wrong thing and betraying my husband, but I saw it as a lesser evil than going outside.
“Now the man is even threatening to kill my son for impregnating me, so I had to move my son out of Akwanga and take him somewhere else to save his life.
“This is more so because I was the one who put him into the whole mess. I have to protect him.”
Matina’s husband insisted he would not accept a pregnancy that is not his.
Matina fears her husband may kill her and has left the house for him.
However, she says she intends to engage a lawyer to fight for the house since she contributed a larger share in building it.
“I will engage a lawyer if my husband tries to do anything funny. He should not take me for granted as I’m prepared for him,” she told The Nation.
“He can’t father a child. His sperm count is very low and he is not ready to address it. What does he want me to do?”
She added that she will not abort the baby she made with her son.
She said: “I won’t abort it. Rather, I will allow it and deliver my baby. I have been looking for it for long, so I won’t let it go. It belongs to my son.
“I have decided to keep it because it is blood within my blood. I will keep it. All I want is that since the marriage didn’t work, we should sell the house, share the proceeds and everyone will go his way.”
The husband expressed his disappointment at his wife’s action.
“How can she allow her son to impregnate her and try to foist it on me? How would she do that? That is my anger,” he said.
“But if she is ready to go, let her go. We built the house together and whatever she wants, I don’t have an issue with that.”

Philanthropist, Community Developer and Politician – Dr Elkanah Garang has opined that come 2023, Aspirants from Mangu LGA be considered for the Little Rayfield top Job. Dr Elkanah made this known in an interview with Nigeriastarnewsblog correspondent on Friday 4th March 2022.
While answering questions as to the readiness of political parties and their candidates especially those contesting for Governorship in Plateau State, Dr Garang told our correspondent that Mangu LGA is ripe to produce the next Governor of Plateau State. The APC faithful noted the quality of aspirants in Mangu LGA as well as the immense contribution played by the good people of Mangu towards the development of the state as the premise upon which he based his call for the LGA to produce the next Governor.
Mangu as a local government has not produced a governor despite being a major political stakeholder in the state. Dr Garang pointed out that though everyone is constitutionally allowed to run for office in a democratic dispensation, It is equally important to be our brothers keeper as well as recognise and reward hard work.
When asked which direction Bokkos may likely take in the gubernatorial, he said even though it’s a bit too early to conclude, it is however worth noting that Bokkos and Mangu share a political history and enjoy a cordial relationship. This friendship will naturally guide and shape events in the political landscape in the coming months.
He also posed a reminder of how instrumental the people of Mangu were in ensuring that Governor Simon Bako Lalong emerged with a landslide victory in 2015 and 2019, stressing that the decision to pick a running mate from Mangu LGA cannot be overlooked in the victories and emergence of the present administration.
Dr Elkanah Garang is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and front line contender for House of Representatives for Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency come 2023.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Friday in Akure said that his presidential ambition, come 2023, is neither a threat nor to brag but a reality.
Tinubu stated this at the palace of Deji of Akure.
The APC stalwart was in Akure to seek the support of traditional rulers in Ondo State for his ambition. Tinubu had earlier met with traditional rulers from the southern part of the state in Okitipupa. In addition, he also had a meeting with traditional rulers from the northern part of the state in Owo; before the Akure meeting with traditional rulers in the Ondo Central Senatorial District.
He explained that a presidential candidate should have wisdom on how to govern a large crowd; saying he has what it requires to rule Nigeria.
Further, Tinubu said he had passion for the country; citing many struggles he had fought during the nascent democracy and those that benefitted from his political stance. According to him, he is fit and bold to win the political contest.
He added that he had informed President Muhammadu Buhari about his ambition; adding that the president had given him marching orders.
Tinubu noted that he was seeking support and prayers from traditional rulers in the South-West in attaining his presidential target.
He promised that he would create employment opportunities and develop the country if voted into power in 2023; saying that he had abilities and is medically fit to transform the country.
Responding, the Deji of the Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladelusi, described Tinubu as a builder; acknowledging that he would transform the country if he emerges as president. Oba Aladelusi noted that Tinubu’s antecedents are obvious which would clear the way for his ambition.
He said that Tinubu had respect and regards for traditional ruler;, promising that Akure kingdom in particular would cast its votes massively for him.
The traditional ruler also said that traditional rulers in Yoruba land would have a meeting with all contestants from the region and agree on one candidate.
