Buhari appoints board of management of NNPC limited

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the Board and Management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, in accordance with the power vested in him under Section 59(2) of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021.

Chairman of the Board is Senator Margret Chuba Okadigbo (South East), Mele Kolo Kyari, Chief Executive Officer, and Umar I. Ajiya, Chief Financial Officer.

Other Board Members are; Dr Tajudeen Umar (North East), Mrs Lami O. Ahmed (North Central), Mallam Mohammed Lawal (North West), Engr. Henry Obih (South East), Barrister Constance Harry Marshal (South South), and Chief Pius Akinyelure(South West).

The appointments take effect from the date of the incorporation of the NNPC Limited.

Also appointed are Executive Commissioners of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. They are: Dr Nuhu Habib (Kano), Executive Commissioner, Development and Production, Dr Kelechi Onyekachi Ofoegbu (Imo), Executive Commissioner, Economic Regulations and Strategic Planning, Capt. Tonlagha Roland John (Delta), Executive Commissioner, Health, Safety, Environment and Community, and Jide Adeola (Kogi), Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services and Administration.

Earlier appointed are the Board Chairman, CEO, Executive Commissioner, Exploration and Acreage Management, and Executive Commissioner, Finance and Accounts.

New appointees at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority are Francis Alabo Ogaree (Rivers), Executive Director, Hydrocarbon Processing, Mustapha Lamorde (Adamawa), Executive Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Community, Mansur Kuliya (Kano), Executive Director, Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, Bashir Sadiq (Sokoto), Executive Director, Corporate Services and Administration, and Dr Zainab Gobir (Kwara), Executive Director, Economic Regulations and Strategic Planning.

They join the Board Chairman, Executive Director, Downstream Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure, the CEO, and Executive Director, Finance and Accounts, who had earlier been appointed.

For Midstream and Downstream Infrastructure Fund, new Council Members are; Mr Effiong Abia (Akwa Ibom), Bobboi Ahmed (Adamawa), and Engr. Abdullahi Bukar (Katsina).

It will be recalled that President Buhari had last September written the Senate on the administrative structure amendments to the Petroleum Industry Act, which included appointment of Non-Executive Board Members, removal of the Ministries of Petroleum and Finance from the Board of the two new institutions, and appointment of Executive Directors.

Buhari rejects creation of state police to tackle insecurity

President Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed calls for state police in Nigeria, saying that it is not an option.

Buhari made this call during an interview with Channels TV on Wednesday, January 5.

Several Governors have called for state policing as a way to solve insecurity and banditry across the country.

While speaking in an interview with Channels TV, the President averred that there is a higher chance of state governors; abusing their powers if the police force is removed from the Federal control and handed over to states.

“State police is not an option. Find out the relationship between local government and the Governors. Are the third tier of government getting what they are supposed to get constitutionally? Are they getting it? Let the people in local government tell you the truth; the fight between local governments and the Governor,” he said.

Commenting on the security situation in the country, Buhari said traditional rulers must play a huge role in bringing peace to communities.

“The role of traditional rulers must not be undermined, because in their areas they know who is who; even by families, not to even talk of individuals. So, we have to revert to that system for us to have effective security in the localities.

“For example, there were two Governors that came to see me about problems – Oyo state and one other state – because the herders were in their forests but the animals were going into the neighbouring farms, and eating the crops; I said, as far as I know, the farmers and herders have been co-existing in Nigeria for generations. Let them go and ask the local leadership what has gone wrong; why the break in communication between the local leadership and the herders,” he said.

38-year-old woman declares interest in succeeding Buhari as President of Nigeria

A 38-year-old media entrepreneur and youth development advocate, Mrs. Khadijah Okunnu-Lamidi, has become the first woman to declare interest in contesting the 2023 Presidential election.

Okunnu-Lamidi formally declared her intention in succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 at a media event held at Freedom Park, Lagos on Monday, January 3, 2022.

The woman, Founder of Slice Media Solutions and daughter of Lateef Femi Okunnu (SAN); a former Federal Commissioner of Works & Housing, decried the worrisome state of unemployment in Nigeria; as well as the poor prospects facing the youth; even as she disclosed that she has become the arrowhead for the intervention of her generation’s interests across the nation for politics and good governance.

Addressing newsmen at the event, Okunnu-Lamidi disclosed that her motivation in vying for the Presidency stems from her desire to make Nigeria work for its diverse populace; while also harnessing the undoubted power of its teeming youths to unleash the country’s latent potential as a force to be reckoned with globally.

While noting that 2023 is a defining moment for the country; Okunnu-Lamidi restated her confidence in playing a leading role in writing a new history and restoring hope for Nigeria.

“I seek to change the direction of our country; because time and chance will happen to all of us and the time for action is today.

“We need a better class, a better crop of leaders that are selfless, disciplined, and bound with integrity, and above all; who love the country and are invested in her future.

“I am here to activate all people, the old, the poor, the rich; to unite around a common ideal on the basis of a consensus about a superior national development agenda,” she said.

Further, the young woman referenced the 70 per cent youths who are often disenfranchised; many of who have not taken their rightful place in choosing the government of Nigeria. She expressed disappointment that Nigeria had missed important milestones in building the nation; while also declaring that previous leadership had failed the country.

Reeling out statistics to back up her claims; Okunnu-Lamidi revealed that youths under the age of 30 have borne the most impact of bad governance; adding that the youth account for 13.9 million of the unemployment figures which stood at 21.7 million in the second quarter of 2020. Further, she disclosed that life expectancy at birth in Nigeria, which stood at 60.87 years in 2021; is one of the lowest in Africa and in the world; while noting that the infant mortality rate hovers at 57.701 deaths per 1000 live births.

In addition, she referenced the spiraling rate of poverty, which has seen an estimated 40.1 percent of the Nigerian population currently living below the poverty line; as well as the rising rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Pointing the finger for the worrisome unemployment indices in Nigeria at high population growth rate; deficient school curricula and poor teacher orientation; lack of focus on manufacturing as a result of overdependence on the oil sector; as well as flawed and inconsistent government policies on youth unemployment; Okunnu-Lamidi, nevertheless, reiterated that there is hope for the country, especially with the emergence of a competent president in 2023.

She said: “We are all guilty for surrendering to temporary powerlessness. We can and must start to think differently.

“We sing often about our heroes past. These are people who entered the governance of Nigeria by design or by chance at very young age to take over from the colonial power that ruled Nigeria.

“This again is a generational inflection point for the nation.

“A nation desperate for leadership needs the young, the strong, those who have vision, those who have ideas, those who have a united Nigerian identity and a belief in this country.

“The people of Nigeria believe in Nigeria. They should not be led by leaders who don’t.

“We have to keep fighting for what we believe in, and above all, never lose hope. If you were waiting for a sign, this is it,” said Okunnu-Lamidi, who is currently an independent candidate.

Okunnu-Lamidi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Human Resources Management from the University of Bolton and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Project Management (MSc) from Heriot-Watt University.

Eight suspects arrested in connection to the kidnap of Sum Pyem of Gindiri

Official statement from the command of Operations Safe Haven states that “While the Paramount ruler of Gindiri in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Chief Charles Mato has been with his abductors, the commander OPSH, Major General Ibrahim Ali placed the troops deployed at Gyanbus on red alert and a hot trail of the perpetrators followed”

Consequently, “Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnap incidence and are being interrogated” 

Following this development, the paramount ruler  early this morning of Friday 31 December 2021 has been released by his abductors. 

Meanwhile Operations Safe Haven is still very much on ground to ensure all those involved in the kidnap of the traditional ruler are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

Plateau Government stopped purported installation of Alh Maiwada Ya’u as Danmalikin Pengana

Plateau State Government has directed the Chairman of Bassa Local Government and the Chairman of the Traditional Council in the Area to immediately halt the purported installation of one Alh. Maiwada Ya’u Mohammed (CEO Jengre Petroleum Company Ltd.) as Danmalikin Pengana by a non-existent “Emir of Pengana”. 

This was contained in a statement signed by Hon. Sylvanus Tapgun ,commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Plateau State and made available to newsmen in Jos 

The Government frowned at the purported installation scheduled for 2nd January 2022 as contained in invitation cards and posters carrying misleading information about a non-existing “Pengana Emirate” which it said is a clear display of arrogance and an attempt to inflame passions and cause a breakdown of law and order. 

The  statement further reads that Government also views the planned installation of the said beneficiary by this non-existing Emirate as an attempt to disrupt the peace of Bassa Local Government Area and the entire State by using Chieftancy matters which people hold dear to their hearts. 

Government therefore warns those involved in this planned installation by this non-existing entity to desist forthwith as law enforcement agencies have been put on red alert and directed to immediately arrest anyone who contravenes the directive. 

It further mandates traditional rulers and Local Government Chairmen across the State to be proactive and nip in the bud any similar attempt by unscrupulous groups and individuals to disrupt public peace and security through mischief that uses the traditional Institution which is considered a sacred one. 

Government further warns that it will not hesitate to come down hard on any traditional ruler who is found to be negligent or supporting such clandestine activities openly or secretly. 

It also urges the public to ignore the said event as there is no such thing as “Emirate of Pengana” in Plateau State. 

For the avoidance of doubt, the paramount ruler of Pengana Chiefdom in Bassa LGA recognised by Government is the “Ogomo Pengana” HRH. Esau Mamman Shayang (JP) who was installed in 2016.
