Over 262 inmates escaped Jos Custodial Centre

Inmates were the major casualties of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos when gunmen reportedly stormed the facility in large numbers with sophisticated weapons on Sunday.

Sources from the Custodial Centre said that attackers who stormed the facility escaped with their members who were in custody.

Further investigation further revealed that most of those killed during the attack were fleeing inmates of the

Custodial Centre.

Impeccable sources revealed that one of the casualties during the shoot out with the assailants was alleged to be a one star officer who hails from Gindiri in Plateau state.

Meanwhile a statement from the correctional service has confirmed that 9 persons were shot dead during the attack on the Jos Custodial Centre.

A statement signed Francis Enobore for the spokesman of the Custodial Centre on behalf of the Controller General reads that one of the gunmen trapped within the Medium Security Custodial Center, Jos after invading the facility has been identified as one of those killed in the gun duel.

The statement reads that “The attackers who stormed the Custodial Center at about 1720hrs on Sunday 28th November 2021 engaged the Nigerian Correctional Service(NCoS) armed squad personnel in a fierce gun battle before breaking into the yard.

Sadly, one of the NCoS Armed Squad personnel paid the supreme price in the encounter while 9 inmates also lost their lives. Another staff of the Service was shot in the hand and 6 inmates were also injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, some of the attackers and a total of 262 inmates escaped in the melee beforè reinforcement could come from sister services.

However, 10 have so far been recaptured leaving 252 at large.

The statement further added that the Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa condoled with the family and friends of the gallant officer who paid the ultimate price in the encounter promising that the death will not be in vain as all the perpetrators will be hunted and made to face the full wrath of the law.

He thanked the officers and men of other security agencies for the assistance in bringing the situation under control and assured members of the public that the safety of inmates including their care and support, will continue to be a top priority in his administration.

He called for collaboration from patriotic individuals to apprehend the fleeing inmates as well as volunteering credible intelligence that could nip such ugly incidents in the bud.

Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre as at the time of attack, had 1,060 inmates comprising 560 pre-trial detainees and 500 convicts.

Also the Police command also confirmed that nine fleeing inmates from the Jos Correctional Centre have been arrested by the men of the force , this is even as one inmate who earlier left voluntarily surrendered himself.

The arrest was made during a stop and search operation carried out by the Police, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Gabriel Ubah disclosed.

Ubah who spoke with journalists on Monday in Jos, “said that On 28/11/2021 at about 1720hrs, the medium-security custodial centre in Jos came under attack by yet to be identified gunmen where some inmates escaped.

He added that Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command, CP Bartholomew Onyeka who led reinforcement to the scene, directed that the entire centre be cordoned.

“The CP also directed immediate stop and search where nine (9) escapees have been re-captured by the Police and are in custody while one escapee voluntarily surrendered himself to the Police. Based on the prompt response, the situation was brought under control by the superior gunfire of Security Agencies. The Police and other Security Agencies are currently on the ground to effectively deprive the hoodlums of the space they desire to perpetrate.

Jos Correctional Centre: Seven inmates re-arrested after gunmen attacked — Police

The Plateau State Police Command has said that a total of seven inmates who escaped from the Jos Correctional Centre after gunmen attacked the facility on Sunday have been re-arrested.

The spokesman of the command, Ubah Ogaba who confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday night said, “On 28/11/2021 at about 1720hrs, the medium-security custodial centre in Jos came under attack by yet to be identified gunmen where some inmates escaped.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command, CP Bartholomew N. Onyeka who led reinforcement to the scene, directed that the entire centre be cordoned.

He continued, “The CP also directed immediate stop and search where seven escapees have been re-arrested by the police and are in custody while one escapee voluntarily surrendered himself to the police.

Jos Custodial Centre recover several bodies after gunmen attack

Several bodies have been recovered by officials of the Jos Custodial center  after the  Medium Security Custodial Centre came under attack by gunmen who reportedly stormed the facility in large number with sophisticated weapons.

Journalist who visited the facility   has counted  as many as six bodies.

It is not clear if the bodies are those of the gunmen who attacked the facility or inmates who attempted to escape

One correctional officer was killed and another shot in the arm when the invaders  arrived at the Custodial Center at about 1720hrs on Sunday and immediately made for the main gate where they engaged the armed squad personnel in a gun battle before breaking into the yard. 

The front office holding the records of the JCC was set alight by the invaders.

As at the time of writing this report officials of the Jos Custodial center were still trying to ascertain the extent of damage to the facility, take head counts of the inmates  and positively identify the bodies to be sure if or not the invaders are  among the dead

Gun men Trapped inside Jos Custodial Centre after Attacking the Facility

The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State came under attack by gunmen who reportedly stormed the facility in large number with sophisticated weapons.

The invaders were said to have arrived at the Custodial Center at about 1720hrs and immediately made for the main gate where they engaged the armed squad personnel in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.

Although they gained entrance to the yard, they are however trapped within as men from sister security services were immediately mobilised to assist the armed guards to cordon the perimeter wall and the entire area.

Reinforcement from the response squad of the Service has also been mobilised to the center.

The situation is presently under control as the attackers firing power is being subdued by superior fire from a combined team of security agencies. Update will be made available as event unfolds.

Breaking: Jos Prisons Under Attack By Suspected Bandits

The Correctional Service Facility in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, came under heavy attack on Sunday by suspected bandits who engaged officers in shoot out trying to gain access into the Correctional Centre.

The bandits were said to have pretended to be on a visit before they opened fire on reaching the gate of the correctional facility.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Jos Correctional Centre were unsuccessful, however, an official of the Centre, who spoke to ‘AIT’ on condition of anonymity, said five inmates had tried to escape during the exchange of gunfire but were promptly re-arrested.

Ongoing reports suggests that there is still sporadic shooting between security forces guarding the facility and the gunmen.

The Jos Correctional Centre is by the headquarters of the Plateau State Police Command as well as the Department of State Services (DSS).

Hon. Joseph Abbey Aku has condemned the attacks on innocent lives in Ta’agbe Village he noted that the attack on Friday, 26th November, 2021, that left many Persons including Children killed and houses burnt, he said this is another attempt by criminal minded persons to disrupt the hard earned peace and putting the State in bad light, Hon Abbey noted with Concern, the increasing waves of attack of innocent and defenceless People in Miango with no justification, and called on the security agencies to act swiftly to unmasked those behind the attacks.

Hon Abbey while sympathizing with the families and victims of those killed, in the sad incident which is clearly the handiwork of criminals that are bent on instilling fear, pain and sorrow among the people with a view to destabilising the State and making fortune from their criminality as well as rupturing the substantial peace attained, he hereby called on the good people of ta’agbe village Maingo to be vigilant and alert the security agencies on any suspected movement.
