The Correctional Service Facility in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, came under heavy attack on Sunday by suspected bandits who engaged officers in shoot out trying to gain access into the Correctional Centre.
The bandits were said to have pretended to be on a visit before they opened fire on reaching the gate of the correctional facility.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Jos Correctional Centre were unsuccessful, however, an official of the Centre, who spoke to ‘AIT’ on condition of anonymity, said five inmates had tried to escape during the exchange of gunfire but were promptly re-arrested.
Ongoing reports suggests that there is still sporadic shooting between security forces guarding the facility and the gunmen.
The Jos Correctional Centre is by the headquarters of the Plateau State Police Command as well as the Department of State Services (DSS).
