More Nigerians Will Become Poor By 2027—World Bank

The World Bank has projected that poverty will increase in Nigeria by three percentage points in five years, to 2027.

The World Bank made this projection in its Africa Pulse report released on the sidelines of the ongoing Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington, DC.

The report, among other information, painted a dire picture of poverty in Nigeria, noting that while economic activity has shown some positive signs, the underlying challenges associated with resource dependence and fragility are projected to escalate poverty levels, demanding focused and effective governance reforms and inclusive economic policies.

The report noted that while Nigeria saw higher-than-expected economic growth in the final quarter of 2024, particularly in its non-oil sector, the country’s status as a resource-rich and fragile nation means it faces a concerning outlook for poverty reduction.

The report indicates that poverty rates in resource-rich, fragile countries, including Nigeria, are expected to increase by 3.6 percentage points between 2022 and 2027, making it the only group in Sub-Saharan Africa with a projected rise in poverty.

The report stated, “Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest extreme poverty rate globally, and a large share of the poor is concentrated in a few countries. About 80 percent of the world’s estimated 695 million extremely poor resided in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2024, compared to 8 percent in South Asia, 2 percent in East Asia and the Pacific, 5 percent in the Middle East and North Africa, and 3 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Within sub-Saharan Africa, half of the 560 million extremely poor in 2024 resided in four countries.

Non-resource-rich countries are expected to continue reducing poverty faster than resource-rich countries.

“Thanks to higher prices of agricultural commodities, non-resource-rich countries will see higher growth overall, despite fiscal pressures. Conversely, resource-rich countries are not expected to grow at the same rate given decelerating oil prices. As a result, resource-rich countries are expected to see less progress in terms of poverty reduction.”

Importantly, poverty in resource-rich, fragile countries (which include large countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria) is expected to increase by 3.6 percentage points over 2022–27, being the only group in the region with increasing poverty rates.

“This follows a well-established pattern: resource wealth combined with fragility or conflict is associated with the highest poverty rates—an average poverty rate of 46 percent in 2024, 13 percentage points above non-fragile, resource-rich countries.

“Meanwhile, non-resource-rich, non-fragile countries saw the biggest gains in poverty reduction since 2000 and fully closed the gap in poverty with other non-resource-rich countries by 2010.”

Consequently, the report suggests that for resource-rich countries like Nigeria, improving fiscal management and developing a stronger fiscal contract with citizens is crucial.

IGP Deploys Special Anti-bandit Squads Nationwide Over Insecurity

Amid rising insecurity across the country, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday ordered the immediate deployment of a special squad to tackle the growing wave of violence.

The police chief also directed all Police Mobile Force squadrons to keep at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby.

Egbetokun issued the directive during a meeting with Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday, as fresh attacks by bandits claimed 21 lives in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States.

In recent weeks, several states, including Plateau, Benue, and Enugu, have witnessed increased violence, with multiple attacks reported on defenceless citizens.

Egbetokun said, “The PMF was created as a strike force – to be swift, decisive and combat-ready. Effective immediately, all PMF squadrons are directed to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby at all times.

“These units must be prepared to support their respective state commands in any situation requiring urgent tactical intervention. Additionally, each squadron will be required to send one unit for training every quarter.

“These sessions will go beyond operational proficiency, placing strong emphasis on ethics, professionalism and the principles of responsible policing.”

He also announced that squadrons will undergo size reviews and reorganisation to boost efficiency and agility.

Egbetokun said, “Currently, squadron sizes will be reviewed and reduced to ensure operational effectiveness and agility. From this moment, PMF commanders will be held vicariously responsible for the conduct of their personnel.

“You are expected to lead proactively through regular lectures, inspections and localised training programmes that reinforce discipline, respect for human rights and operational excellence.”

Restating the decision to withdraw mobile police officers from escort duties, Egbetokun expressed concern that such assignments have weakened the tactical effectiveness of the Police Mobile Force.

He also warned that acts of indiscipline among mobile police personnel will no longer be tolerated.

“As you are aware, directives have already been issued concerning the withdrawal of PMF personnel from authorised deployments. It is the duty of all commanders to enforce this directive without delay. A firm but gradual withdrawal from non-core assignments is underway.

“The priority now is to refocus our strength and personnel towards combating violent crimes and safeguarding national security. We will also inject new leadership perspectives, strategic approaches and continuous capacity-building initiatives aimed at restoring the PMF to its rightful place as a dominant force in internal security and a model of tactical excellence.

“The Nigeria Police Force will no longer allow the values, standards and discipline that once defined the police mobile force to be undermined.

“As a strike force of the Nigerian Police Force, the PMF carries an immense responsibility to confront armed threats, insurgency and criminal violence with integrity and courage.

Fubara, Tinubu Hold Talks in London

Indications emerged on Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu met with suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, in London, while on working visit.

Although, The Africa Report said that the meeting was at the instance of Governor Fubara, the Presidency kept sealed lips on the matter.

Attempts made to get confirmation from the Presidency could not yield any results as no one was ready to comment on it.

However, someone privy to the meeting claimed that it was the first face‑to‑face since Tinubu invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution on 18 March, declaring a state of emergency in Rivers and suspending the democratically elected governor Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu and the entire members of the House of Assembly.

Tinubu’s national broadcast on March 18, cited “months of intense political instability” that had “paralysed governance” and “threatened national stability.”

The President appointed a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice‑Admiral Ibok‑Ete Ekwe Ibas as sole administrator.

It was gathered that President Tinubu
agreed to meet Fubara in an attempt to defuse the lingering crisis.

The duo reportedly discussed restoring functional government in the oil‑rich state, officials say.

Neither side disclosed details, but presidential aides who spoke on condition of anonymity said there were talks to see Fubara back in power before his six-month suspension elapses.

It was learned that Fubara’s estranged political godfather, now the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was not part of the meeting and was nervous about such an arrangement holding without him.

40-Year-Old Woman Rapes 12-Year-Old Boy In Bauchi

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the community, Fatimah Ibrahim, a 40-year-old resident of Tashan Jama’are, has been accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy in Azare.

The incident was reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Azare on March 1, 2025, by a concerned citizen from Katagum Local Government Area.

According to police sources, the young victim, who has been identified as Abubakar Yakubu (not his real name), had been employed by Ibrahim to assist in her business.

It is alleged that the boy, an Arabic pupil, was housed at Ibrahim’s residence, where he experienced inappropriate conduct over a two-month period.

During interviews, the victim recounted his ordeal, describing how he had come to trust Ibrahim as a maternal figure. He reported that the defendant engaged him in acts of a sexual nature when her visitors were not present.

Disturbingly, he mentioned being given a mixture believed to involve lemon juice, which he suspects may have been tampered with prior to the assaults.

The victim indicated that this abuse occurred on multiple occasions during his time in her care.

Following the report, police conducted an investigation, leading to Ibrahim’s interrogation, during which she reportedly admitted to the allegations against her.

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, and once completed, Ibrahim will undergo profiling before being charged in court for the established offenses.

CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil Anipr, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Bauchi State Command, confirmed the incident and underscored the commitment of local authorities to ensure justice for the victim.

As the community grapples with the gravity of this case, police officials are urging anyone with additional information to come forward in order to aid the investigation.

Plateau Christians Stage Peace Walk, Demand Justice for Bokkos, Bassa Killings

Churches and Christian faithful in Plateau State held a massive peaceful protest on Easter Monday, condemning the recent killings in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas. The march, which began at the PRTV Roundabout in Rayfield, ended at the Plateau State Government House, where Governor Caleb Mutfwang and his deputy, Ngo Josephine Piyo, received the demonstrators. Also in attendance were federal and state lawmakers, executive council members, and other government officials.

This was the second peace walk organized by the Church on the Plateau, led jointly by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Denominational Leaders Forum. Protesters, dressed in black, red, and white—symbolizing mourning, a call to end the violence, and peaceful resistance—demanded justice and immediate government intervention.

A joint statement, presented by Rev. Amos Mohzo (President of COCIN and Chairman of the Denominational Leaders Forum) and co-signed by CAN Chairman Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo and Rev. Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam, was addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The statement condemned the “unprovoked, horrific, and persistent attacks” in Bokkos and Mangu, which have claimed over 50 lives in recent weeks.

“These are not communal clashes but calculated acts of terror,” the church leaders asserted, accusing suspected armed Fulani herdsmen of targeting Christian communities in nighttime raids. They criticized the federal government’s security response, calling for stronger action.

While acknowledging Tinubu’s earlier condemnation of the attacks, the leaders rejected official claims describing the Bassa killings as “retaliatory clashes,” insisting that the truth must not be sacrificed for political convenience.

The statement detailed several recent attacks, including:

  • April 1: Pastor James Amusa was beaten and thrown into a well; 38 others were killed in coordinated assaults.
  • March 27: Armed men opened fire on mourners in Ruwi, killing several.
  • March 7 & January 9: Villagers, including Rev. Danjuma Lekuk, were killed in targeted attacks.

In Bassa’s Irigwe land alone, at least 71 people were killed in 19 separate attacks between January and April 14. One of the deadliest incidents occurred near a military barracks, where 51 people were slaughtered in 45 minutes without security intervention.

The church leaders demanded:
✔ Strengthened state security infrastructure.
✔ Community policing outposts.
✔ Thorough investigations into the attacks.
✔ Humanitarian aid and resettlement for displaced persons.
✔ Protection for religious leaders and critical transport routes.
✔ International cooperation to curb terrorism financing.

“This is not just a Plateau problem—it is a Nigerian problem,” they declared, warning that unchecked violence threatens national stability.

Governor Mutfwang’s Response:
Governor Mutfwang vowed to pursue justice for victims, declaring that Plateau will be freed from decades of insecurity. He commended CAN and church leaders for speaking out and assured that those arrested for recent violence would face justice.

He revealed ongoing talks with President Tinubu and security chiefs to improve community protection. Urging citizens to reject bitterness, he emphasized Plateau’s peaceful nature but warned that the people would defend themselves if necessary.

The governor also highlighted the dangers of illegal mining and drug abuse, noting that mining accidents have claimed more lives than some violent attacks. He promised youth empowerment through lawful mineral exploration and called for unity, declaring: “Plateau shall be free, Plateau shall prosper.”

The protest ended with prayers, songs, and renewed calls for peace and justice nationwide.

Governor Mutfwang Bans Night Grazing, Others Amid Renewed Attacks on Plateau Communities

In a heartfelt statewide broadcast, Plateau State Governor, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has announced decisive security measures following fresh attacks that have claimed dozens of lives in Bassa and Bokkos Local Government Areas.

Speaking solemnly, the governor said, “I speak to you not just as your Governor, but as your brother—one who deeply feels the pain and sorrow that has again darkened our land.”

The most recent violence occurred in the late hours of Sunday, April 13, when Zikke Village in Bassa came under a deadly attack, resulting in the death of innocent men, women, and children.

This attack followed closely on the heels of another tragic incident in Bokkos, where over 50 lives were lost. Governor Mutfwang described the violence as “calculated, persistent, and painful—but Plateau remains unbroken.”

He commended emergency responders and security forces for their swift action and appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing federal forces to act swiftly in pursuit of justice.

As part of the new security measures taking effect from Wednesday, April 16th, the Governor announced a strict ban on night grazing across the state, aiming to reduce security threats and curb movement of suspected attackers.

Additionally, he banned the transportation of cattle after 7 PM and restricted motorcycle movement across the state from 7 PM to 6 AM, saying these have been used as tools to facilitate attacks.

To support affected communities, the governor ordered all hospitals in the attacked areas to provide free medical care to victims, while assuring that “relief materials are already on their way.”

He called on traditional rulers and youth leaders to mobilize and “revive local vigilante patrols in partnership with security forces,” urging community-based cooperation in defending the land.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families, saying, “To the grieving families in Zikwe, Bokkos, and beyond—your pain is ours. We mourn with you, and we will not rest until peace is restored.”

He concluded with a rallying call for unity and strength: “Let us remain calm, vigilant, and united. Together, we will rise beyond this grief—stronger, safer, and more determined than ever.”

With these new measures in place, Plateau State begins yet another chapter in its determined fight to protect lives and restore peace across its troubled communities.

CHIEF KEFAS CONDEMNS KILLINGS ON THE PLATEAU, CALLS FOR MOBILISATION OF LOCAL VIGILANTEES TO TACKLE INSECURITY

CHIEF KEFAS CONDEMNS KILLINGS ON THE PLATEAU, CALLS FOR MOBILISATION OF LOCAL VIGILANTEES TO TACKLE INSECURITY

I am deeply grieved and outraged by the barbaric killing of hundreds of innocent people in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas of Plateau State over the last two weeks. This recurring violence against peaceful communities is not only heartbreaking, but it also underscores a tragic failure in our collective responsibility to protect human life and dignity.

I cannot, in good conscience, remain silent while our people are butchered in their sleep. The time for mere condemnation has passed. We must now rise with purpose and determination to defend our communities against these heinous acts.

Let me remind us all of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in

Luke 22:36: “Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.”

Even Christ acknowledged the need for self-defence in times of danger. We are a peace-loving people, but peace does not mean surrendering our lives to bloodthirsty criminals without resistance.

I am calling on the Plateau State Government to act boldly and urgently. Just as the governments of Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto States have done, I urge our leaders to empower local vigilante groups with the necessary tools to defend our communities. Let them be equipped with licensed firearms, communication devices, and logistical support to monitor and report suspicious movements to the security agencies in real time.

Our vigilante groups are not outsiders – they are sons and daughters of the soil who know every footpath, every forest, and every stranger. Their knowledge and presence are invaluable in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and targeted killings.

We cannot continue to bury our brothers and sisters while hoping for salvation from afar. Security is a shared responsibility. The people must be empowered to protect themselves while working hand-in-hand with conventional forces.

I call on our traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth organisations to rally together. We must not only mourn the dead – we must defend the living. The time to act is now.
