Plateau Residents Unite in Candlelight Vigil to Remember Victims of Christmas Eve Tragedy

In a compelling show of unity, Plateau residents gathered in significant numbers for a candlelight vigil, expressing grief and paying tribute to the indomitable spirit of their fellow community members who tragically lost their lives in the recent Bokkos and Barkin Ladi massacres on Christmas Eve.

On Sunday, January 7, 2024, the Plateau Youth G17 Peace and Progressive Forum guided the community through a somber program at Secretariat Junction. This gathering illuminated a sense of unity, strength, solace, and a mutual resolve to build a future characterized by collaborative endeavors for lasting peace. The occasion included diverse tributes, uplifting songs, and poignant poems.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang spoke to the solemn assembly, recognizing the challenging period confronting the Plateau State Government. He assured the citizens that the government would remain steadfast and reiterated its dedication to the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the people.

Governor Mutfwang, represented by Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, expressed, “Though we may endure weeping for the night, joy will come in the morning.” He advocated for the establishment of state policing, pointing to the expansive territories that have posed difficulties for the control of federal security forces and have become a refuge for terrorists.

Addressing the recent statement by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), which alleged over 300 deaths days before the Christmas Eve attacks, Governor Mutfwang labeled it as misleading and malicious. He cautioned against the spread of false rumors and clarified that the state government had not declared a public holiday but encouraged citizens to dress in black as the week-long mourning period concluded.

Governor Mutfwang urged for continued prayers, solidarity, and support for the government’s efforts in ensuring peace and security for all.

Rev. Joshua Sati, Leader of Plateau G17, expressed dismay at the manner in which individuals were killed, emphasizing the heart-wrenching realization that these innocent lives were no more. He called for a change in the nation’s security architecture, advocating for the decentralization of security to local communities through community policing.

“When will Enough be Enough? It is time to change the security architecture of this nation, It is time for us to bring down security to the grassroots, through community policing; we are calling on the Government to do the needful,” he asserted.

Rev. Sati appreciated the presence of those gathered, including members of the state executive council and the support of Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos. While acknowledging the federal government’s response, he urged the president to rise to the occasion and address the issue permanently.

The poignant highlight of the event was the collective lighting of candles in honor of the over 150 individuals massacred across 23 villages in Bokkos and Barkin Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

Prophet Isa El-Buba led a Peaceful Protest: A Cry for Justice and Restoration on the Plateau

In a solemn gathering organized by the Initiative for Better & Brighter Nigeria (IBBN), led by Prophet Dr. Isa El-Buba, men, women, and youth poured into the streets of Plateau State on January 6, 2023, to mourn the lives lost in recent heinous attacks. The procession, starting from the old airport roundabout and ended at the famous Secretariat Bridge, resonated with heartfelt prayers and a plea for justice.

Prophet Dr. Isa El-Buba, expressing gratitude for the massive turnout, commended the government for allocating days of mourning. In his impassioned address, he emphasized that the issue transcends religious boundaries, pointing to an intentional agenda by groups like the Fulani militia to displace locals from their ancestral lands—an unequivocal act of terrorism.

“We are peacefully demanding the Government to fish out the bandits within 21 days or face sustained protests until justice prevails. The escalating impact on the community, from soaring prices of essential goods to halted businesses and paralyzed agriculture, cannot be ignored.”

Prophet El-Buba’s plea extended beyond security concerns, addressing the societal impact of unregulated alcoholic drinks. He urged the government to intervene and curb the consumption of dangerous substances like Goskolo, emphasizing the role of men as defenders.

Leaders from diverse groups echoed grievances, urging authorities to restore communities to their rightful owners. The collective voice emphasized unwavering support for the State Government in its quest for justice.

As Plateau State grapples with the aftermath of these attacks, the call for prayers resonates. Prophet El-Buba encouraged citizens to maintain hope for stable peace and restoration.

Chaos erupts as angry women destroy the residence of a traditional ruler in Plateau

Demonstrators set fire to the residence of the District Head of Bokkos Saf Adanchin on Friday, protesting what they deemed arbitrary arrests in the aftermath of recent killings in the Plateau community.

Their actions were a manifestation of discontent with the apprehension of certain community members linked to the assaults in the area.

The demonstrators, predominantly composed of young people and women, extended their protest to the Joint Security Task Force Operation Safe Haven base and the Divisional Police Office in the Bokkos Local Government Area community to voice their dissatisfaction with the situation.

However, the protests escalated into violence as they advanced to the district head’s palace, overpowering security personnel and setting the building, along with vehicles parked within the premises, on fire.

At the time of releasing this information, law enforcement authorities in the state have not yet provided a statement on the issue. However, they had previously confirmed the apprehension of eight individuals linked to the Christmas Eve assaults in the region.

Expressing their grievances, the Bokkos Progressive Youths have accused security forces of partiality since the incidents on Christmas Eve in Bokkos. In a statement, the president, Luka Tulladem, conveyed, “With a heavy heart, we address you regarding the ongoing infringement of human rights by the military deployed to thwart the attacks that commenced on December 23, 2023, in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria.”

Following the tragic incident, we have observed a continuous pattern of arrests, detentions, and brutal treatment of survivors who managed to escape the terror inflicted by the assailants. In many instances, these survivors have endured incapacitation and gunshot wounds from the very military forces entrusted with their protection.

Condemnations Follow Attacks
The protest marks the latest response to the simultaneous assaults on communities in the Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi local government areas of the North-Central State, resulting in the loss of over 200 lives and the destruction of hundreds of homes and farmlands.

The Christmas Eve attack garnered condemnation both locally and globally. President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation into the incidents, while Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has called for unified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for these atrocious acts.

But during the visit, Shettima appealed to the residents to “resist the temptation to succumb to sectional divisions or the poisonous rhetoric of hatred towards your fellow citizens, as we pursue justice to ensure your security”.

Pope Francis also called for prayers for the victims of the violence.

“Let us pray together for the victims of the severe violence in Nigeria’s Plateau State. May God free Nigeria from these horrors!” the Catholic pontiff said.

In his reaction to the recent attack on Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto Matthew Hassan-Kukah said the repeated and unending killings on the Plateau is beyond herder-farmer clashes, adding that the murderers “want their own kind of Nigeria according to their ideology”.

The cleric charged the government to resist the agenda of the marauders and protect Nigerians.

Kukah labelled the marauders as “sons of Satan” who “opted to extinguish and snatch the light of the joy of Christmas from thousands of people on the Plateau”.

“There is a method to this madness. “The choice of location, communities, timing, and seeming hooded identities of the killers mask a fact: we may not know who they are, but someone wants something from the Middle Belt. Stretch your imagination from the emergence of the modern Nigerian state and connect the dots,” Kukah said in a statement.

Appeal court unfair to me, Gov. Mutfwang tells S’Court

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has said the Court of Appeal was unfair to him in nullifying his election.

He also said he was not given a fair hearing by the appellate court

He said he presented eight points to the Court of Appeal to prove the validity of his election, but only one was determined.

He explained that the dismissal of the seven issues he raised by the Court of Appeal was against the directive of the Supreme Court that intermediate courts should pronounce on all issues placed before it

So This Happened (225)…
He pleaded with the Supreme Court to declare him the validly elected governor of the state..

Mutfwang, who made the submission in his brief at the Supreme Court by an eight-man team of Senior Advocates of Nigeria led by Kanu Agabi, said “The law is settled that wherever there is a wrong, there must be a remedy.”

The hearing of his brief by the Supreme Court is on Tuesday.

He said, “Eight issues were distilled and placed before the court below for determination. Unfortunately, only one issue (of jurisdiction) was determined by the court below leaving untouched seven issues.

“This court has stated in quite a number of cases that intermediate courts should pronounce on all issues placed before it. It should not restrict it to one or more issues which its opinion may dispose of the matter.

“This is to give the apex court the benefit of their views in the matter should there be need to consider other issues not determined by the intermediate court.”

Mutfwang insisted that since he was not given fair hearing, the Supreme Court should dismiss the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which invalidated his election.

He added, “It is our further submission that having denied fair hearing to the Appellant, with respect to the Notice of Preliminary Objection as well as a Motion to strike out the incompetent Grounds of Appeal,, the decision of the lower Court to dismiss same is, with all due respect manifestly flawed.

“The implication of denial of fair hearing renders proceedings null and void. See the case POROYE V. MAKARFI (2018) 1 NWLR (PT.1599) 91 AT 153, PARAS. D – E.

“We respectfully urge the Honourable Court to invoke its powers in Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act by upholding the Notice of Preliminary Objection of the Appellant embedded in his Brief before the lower Court and also granting the Motion of the Appellant filed on 2nd November, 2023 before the lower Court by striking out Grounds 1 – 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21 and 22 of the Notice and Grounds of Appeal of the 1st and 2nd Respondents.

He said he has attached enough evidence to prove that the Court of Appeal should not have cancelled his election.

He said, “We have demonstrably shown in this brief that, to all intents and purposes, the Judgment of the lower Court, with the greatest respect, has occasioned injustice of unquantifiable magnitude to the Appellant.

“The law is settled that wherever there is a wrong, there must be a remedy. This principle of law which is of considerable antiquity is expressed in the Latin maxim, ubi jus, ibi remedium.

“We therefore most respectfully urge the Honourable Court to allow the appeal, set aside the Judgment of the lower Court and thereupon affirm the Appellant as the duly elected Governor of Plateau State.”

He listed eight reasons why the Supreme Court should validate his election as the governor of Plateau State.

He said, “The issue of nomination and sponsorship, which underpinned Ground 1 of the Petition, is not only a pre-election but within the internal affairs of the 4th Respondent, and as such, the 1st and 2nd Respondents lacked the locus standi to canvass it.

“The Judgment of the lower Court delivered on 19th November, 2023 is fatally flawed for want of jurisdiction having regard to Section 285(2) of the Constitution (supra). Disobedience of Court Order is not one of the grounds for maintaining election Petition under Section 134 of the Electoral Act (supra), nor is it part of Section 177(c) of the Constitution (supra), let alone disqualifying the Appellant from contesting the election.

“At any rate, given the overwhelming oral and documentary evidence including but not limited to EXHIBITS U and 2RA3, the 4th Respondent complied with EXHIBIT G1 by conducting State Congress on 25th September, 2021 in Plateau State.

“The evidence of PW16 was thoroughly discredited and controverted and as such the lower Court was clearly in the wrong to have heavily relied on it against the Appellant.

“The 1st and 2nd Respondents woefully failed to discharge the requisite burden of proof on them and as such not entitled to the reliefs sought in their Petition more so that having impugned the election as invalid for non-compliance, it is absurd of them to lay claim to victory for the same election.

“The lower court was, with all due respect, in grave error when it held that the Tribunal was wrong in striking out the offensive paragraphs of Appellant’s Reply and in utilizing evidence of PW16, PW24, PW27 and PW28 as a Tribunal of first instance.

“The lower Court denied fair hearing to the Appellant by dismissing his Notice of Preliminary Objection as well as Motion to strike out certain grounds of the Notice of Appeal of the 1st and 2nd Respondents without properly considering same

Plateau Attacks: Plateau Women Rally Against Injustice, Seek Global Intervention

Hon. Chundung B.P. Kele’s impassioned address during a peaceful protest on January 4, 2024, resonates as a rallying cry for justice, urging Governmental and security stakeholders to take a stand against the unfolding injustice experienced by the serene citizens of Plateau State.

The Plateau Women, echoing a collective cry for help, came together in substantial numbers to shed light on the recent wave of heinous attacks in Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin Ladi LGA. Hon. Chundung, serving as the voice of over 2 million women, expressed deep concern over the escalating situation that disproportionately affects women and children. With a staggering loss of over 295 lives and thousands displaced, the Plateau Women are haunted by the looming threat of potential annihilation.

In a poignant statement, Hon. Chundung outlined the grim reality faced by these defenseless civilians. Last year alone witnessed the loss of over 600 lives, accompanied by the displacement of several villages, all met with a shocking absence of arrests. The Plateau Women, however, found themselves targeted by security agencies based on false claims from Fulani leaders. They passionately seek equal rights and justice, underscoring their commitment to a God-given land that has always welcomed peaceful coexistence.

Despite extending hospitality, the Plateau citizens face continuous attacks in their homes, even against innocent babies. The narrative perpetuated by some, falsely portraying clashes between farmers and herders, persists while the community endures brutal assaults during the darkest hours of the night.

The pressing questions emerge: Are defenseless infants considered combatants? Do clashes happen when people are asleep, and their homes are invaded?

The Plateau Women challenge whether their lives, as Christians or members of a minority ethnicity, warrant global concern and protection. The prevailing situation appears to be nothing short of genocide, reflecting a desire to dominate and impose foreign cultures, traditions, and religion on their community.

The stakes are high, as the threat, if unchecked, could extend beyond their borders. The Plateau Women emphasize the crucial role the world must play in speaking out against this injustice, urging the global community to intervene for the greater peace and security of humanity. A call is made for mounting global pressure on Nigerian authorities to prioritize citizen safety, eliminating bias in the process.

Furthermore, the Plateau Women insist on a thorough purge of any elements within the military collaborating with terrorists to harm their communities. As a small community with no alternative home, they implore the world to raise its voice and come to their rescue, fostering a collective effort to bring an end to this harrowing plight.

Plateau Attacks: North Central Governors Donate N100 Million Aid to Attacked Victims

In a demonstration of solidarity, governors from the North Central region of Nigeria have contributed N100 million to support those affected by the tragic Christmas Eve attacks in Plateau State.

The Chairman of the North Central Governors Forum, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, announced this benevolent gesture during the forum’s visit to Plateau State, expressing their heartfelt condolences to Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

Governor Sule emphasized that the funds are intended to alleviate the suffering of the survivors, condemning the assailants as terrorists who must be treated accordingly. Benue State’s Governor Hyacinth Alia urged unity among the states of Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, and Niger to collectively combat the menace of terrorism disrupting the peace in the North Central region.

Governor Alia emphasized the necessity for a united strategy and continuous vigilance at the borders to curb the recurring attacks on farming communities. Governor Mutfwang, while appreciating the governors for their visit, expressed regret over the unfortunate circumstances that bring them together, hoping for a future where Plateau State becomes a hub for celebrations rather than mourning.

The grim reminder of the recent attacks on 15 villages in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas, resulting in over 115 casualties and the destruction of 221 houses, highlights the urgency of addressing security challenges in the North Central region.
