Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Plateau State, Hon. Adams Bulus, has urged bloggers and digital media practitioners to uphold responsible and fact-based reporting in their work. He made this call during a courtesy visit by the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association (PLABOMA) to his office in Jos, stressing the crucial role of verified information in sustaining peace and promoting good governance.

Speaking on behalf of PLABOMA, Secretary Ibrahim Kallamu expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for the warm reception and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to credible and ethical digital journalism. He noted that PLABOMA, established in 2020 and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, is made up of over 30 active members who manage high-engagement platforms with audiences ranging from 30,000 to over 120,000 followers.

Kallamu explained that PLABOMA’s mission includes promoting responsible journalism, countering misinformation, and supporting civic education through grassroots digital engagement. “We are not just content creators — we are storytellers and bridges between the people and policymakers,” he said.

In his remarks, Hon. Adams Bulus welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the growing influence of social media in shaping public opinion. However, he expressed concerns about the dangers of misinformation. “The social media space is very delicate,” he said. “Even a farmer with an Android phone can access the internet, and inaccurate information can easily cause chaos. It is important that facts are verified before being published.”

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of accuracy, particularly with government data such as budgetary figures and development projects. He noted that misrepresenting government information not only misleads the public but can also harm progress. He urged PLABOMA members to be partners in progress by promoting transparency and accountability.

Hon. Bulus reaffirmed the Ministry’s openness to collaboration, especially as it begins citizen engagements across 43 zones in the state as part of its ongoing budget preparation process. “You are our partners. We’ll continue to work with you to ensure that Plateau citizens get the right information at the right time,” he concluded.

The visit signals a renewed partnership between the Plateau State Government and digital media practitioners, with both parties committing to shared goals of transparency, public enlightenment, and sustainable development.
