Fire has destroyed a bank building under construction on Adeola Odeku Street in the Victoria Island of Lagos State, injuring nine people.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the nine persons, all male adults, suffered burns and injuries; and were taken to an undisclosed hospital.
“Investigation gathered at the scene revealed the fire emanated from the generator house,” LASEMA said.
A car, outside the building, belonging to Rapid Response Squad (RRS) was also burnt.
First responders including officials of LASEMA, Lagos Fire Service and Rescue, amongst others prevented the inferno from spreading.
The Agency said it received distressed calls of the outbreak at about 10.03am on Tuesday, and rescue operation commenced immediately.
The agency’s spokesperson, Amodu Shakiru who confirmed the incident said the details about the fire outbreak will be communicated later. The agency also said the dampening down process of the incident scene is still in progress.
Cases of fire outbreaks are common in Nigeria’s commercial capital. On April 13, a similar incident occurred in the Maryland area of Lagos that made people to panic. Just last week, the head office of the West African Examination Council was ablaze. A few weeks ago, a popular plaza in Idumota also was in flames.
The state’s emergency response team have taken time to sensitize the populace on the importance of safety at home and work spaces.
