Former Akwa Ibom state governor, Godswill Akpabio, has been elected the President of the 10th Nigerian Senate. He defeated his closest rival, Abdul-Aziz Yari, former Zamfara state governor.

The Red Chamber in Abuja, Nigeria, opened voting for the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly (NASS). At precisely 8:45 a.m., voting for the third seat in the Federation began, alphabetically by state.

Senators Godswill Akpabio and Abdul’aziz Yari’s nominations were received, and the Clerk of the Senate then declared the nomination process concluded in the lack of any further nominations.

The current race is between Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs and also ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State, and Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State.

Top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) include Akpabio and Yari.

Recall that 1st News reported on how President Bola Tinubu endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio. Sources close to the President told one of our correspondents on Saturday; that the deal to make Akpabio president of the senate was; sealed a day before the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress.

Tinubu, Akpabio, and other candidates participated in the primary, which took place in Eagles Square in Abuja from June 6 to 8, 2022.

“Asiwaju (Tinubu) met with Akpabio a day before the primary and; approached him to step down for him. Tinubu said if the former governor would agree, it would send a positive signal to the audience and; other aspirants since he (Akpabio) would be; the first aspirant to be invited to the podium to speak,” one of the sources said.
