In a bid to promote peace, unity, and youth empowerment, Dr. Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, has launched the Vwang District Peace and Unity Football Tournament.
The tournament, held at the Vwang Central Football Field in Jos South Local Government Area, aims to strengthen community bonds while identifying and nurturing football talents among the youth.
During the colorful kick-off ceremony, Dr. Bere emphasized that the event goes beyond football. He described it as a strategic platform to inspire young people, tackle social vices, and align with Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s vision of peacebuilding and youth development.
“This tournament is a deliberate step to harness the incredible football talents in Vwang, promote unity, and empower our youth with opportunities that prepare them for greatness. It’s also a call to action for our youth to shun negative influences and pursue excellence,” Dr. Bere said.
The event attracted FIFA agents, scouts, coaches, and football managers, providing a unique opportunity for players to showcase their skills on a broader stage. Dr. Bere appealed to these professionals to identify promising talents who could advance to national and international platforms.
Traditional ruler Gwom Rwey Vwang, Da Gyang Gut Balak, commended Dr. Bere for his commitment to the community and praised the initiative for its potential to uncover future football stars.
“This tournament will undoubtedly produce players capable of representing Nigeria at global levels. It also serves as a unifying force for our youth,” the traditional ruler remarked.
The tournament is not only a sporting event but also an educational platform to address societal issues such as drug abuse. Through this initiative, the community hopes to instill values of discipline, selflessness, and charity among the youth.
With 10 participating teams equipped with high-quality sports gear, the tournament is set to leave a lasting impact on the Vwang community and beyond.
