On January 18, 2025, the Kedrick Scribner Foundation Inc. hosted Widow’s Mite 5.0: “Widow’s Rejoice” at the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja. This event marked a profound moment in the Foundation’s history, bringing together widows and orphans of fallen heroes of the Nigerian Police Force for a day of honor, support, and joy.
The event opened with an electrifying welcome by Master of Ceremonies Mc Abilitea, whose charm and humor set the tone for an unforgettable day. The widows were celebrated not only for their resilience but also for their ability to forge ahead despite adversities. Care packages containing essential provisions such as 25 kg of rice, spices, sauces, vegetable oil, and other provisions, a gesture aimed at alleviating their immediate needs.
A highlight of the day was the keynote speech by H.E. Hilda Suka-Mafudze, African Union Ambassador to the USA. Her stirring words reminded attendees of the strength inherent in unity and the critical importance of community support in overcoming challenges.
Adding a special touch was an emotional musical performance by internationally acclaimed artist Vicki Yohe. Her Iconic rendition of “Because Of Who You Are” resonated deeply, creating a moment of collective reflection and hope. The Nigeria Police Band School of Music also delivered an outstanding performance, symbolizing solidarity and honoring the legacies of the fallen heroes.
In addition to emotional and spiritual upliftment, practical empowerment was a focal point. Graduates of The Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center in Lagos, Nigeria, were celebrated for completing courses in computer literacy, tailoring, and bead-making. Each graduate received tools essential for their craft, including laptops, sewing machines, and bead kits, empowering them to build sustainable livelihoods.
Students from The Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center’s tailoring program displayed their dresses around the ballroom on mannequins and conducted a runway walk on stage, showcasing additional dresses they had created. This display of creativity and skill was met with admiration from the audience, underscoring the value of vocational training.
Students from The Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center performed The traditional Idoma dance joined by Mrs. Victoria Scribner KSF Senior Advisor, and members from Zaron Cosmetics.
Representatives from prominent organizations and institutions, including Elder Shawn Green from the Church of the Redeemed Of The Lord (Baltimore, USA), Miss Patricia McDougall (Senior Miss Black America New York), representatives of Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijok Sanwo-Olu, The First Lady of Lagos State Nigeria, and Mrs. Basirat AbdulSalam (POWA Lagos Chapter Chairperson), added gravitas to the event. The presentation of a 3-million-naira check to HEKAN Secondary School Mounted Troops Police Barracks Ikeja, Lagos, was a testament to the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to education and the future of orphans and children affected by the loss of their loved ones.
The buffet was another highlight of the day, offering attendees a taste of Nigerian local foods and drinks, prepared by the talented banquet chefs at The Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja.
Widow’s Mite Weekend Finale: A Day of Thanksgiving
The Widow’s Mite 5.0 weekend concluded with “A Day of Thanksgiving” at The United Church of Christ in Nigeria, also known as HEKAN Mounted Troops Barracks, Ikeja, Lagos. During this heartfelt service, Dr. Scribner presented an award to The HEKAN Church in recognition of their community impact. Renowned recording artist Vicki Yohe ministered to the congregation through song, leaving an indelible impression.
The Kedrick Scribner Foundation, led by Dr. Kedrick Scribner, also provided meals to the entire Mounted Troop Barracks community, serving Jollof Rice, chicken, malt, and water. The Foundation’s motto, “Serving People Is What We Do Because We Love,” was exemplified throughout this impactful weekend.
Looking Ahead: Widow’s Mite 6.0
The Kedrick Scribner Foundation is excited to announce the next event, Widow’s Mite 6.0, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, 2025. The goal for this event is to renew the health insurance plans of 700 widows and expand coverage to include an additional 300 widows and orphans.
