The Plateau Cultural Carnival team hosted a press briefing at Kayrocks, Tudun Wada, Jos, to unveil the 2024 edition of the event, scheduled for December 30-31. Themed “Celebrating Unity in Diversity,” this year’s carnival focuses on preserving Plateau State’s rich cultural heritage while fostering unity among its over 50 ethnic groups.

Debra Jalmet, President of the Plateau Cultural Carnival, emphasized the carnival’s importance in combating cultural erosion and promoting Plateau’s tourism potential. She highlighted key activities, including a cultural parade from Secretariat Junction to the carnival village at Crest Hotel, food and art exhibitions, dance and drama presentations, and a Gala Night to honor individuals and organizations contributing to Plateau’s cultural and artistic growth. “This carnival is a platform to preserve our heritage, foster unity, and project Plateau as a global cultural hub,” Jalmet said.

Loretta Gambo, Regional Customer Head of MultiChoice Nigeria, expressed excitement about partnering with the carnival. She highlighted MultiChoice’s commitment to promoting culture and entertainment through platforms like DStv and ShowMax. Gambo emphasized the importance of showcasing Plateau’s rich cultural heritage to counter negative narratives. “This is an opportunity to change the narrative about Plateau and highlight the artisans, vendors, and cultural diversity the state offers,” she said, reaffirming MultiChoice’s support through airtime on African Magic and ShowMax.

Mr. Atsen Jacob, Head of Festival at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Hospitality, noted that the carnival aligns with the ministry’s mission to preserve and promote Plateau’s cultural heritage. He praised the carnival’s role in fostering unity and peace. “This event is vital for connecting the people and changing the negative narratives about Plateau State. The government is committed to supporting its success,” Jacob stated.

Mrs. Toyin Phyllis Wiggins, Cultural Ambassador for the Yoruba team, highlighted the carnival’s role in showcasing Plateau’s diverse culture, food, and music. She called for more partnerships to sustain its impact, saying, “Unity cannot be achieved by one person alone. We need your voices, platforms, and resources to keep showcasing Plateau to the world.”

The Plateau Cultural Carnival continues to grow, with over 10,000 participants in its 2022 edition. The 2024 event promises to be a larger, more impactful celebration of Plateau’s unity and heritage.
