Jos, Plateau State – Media practitioners across Plateau State gathered in Jos for a one-day training program on ethical and security considerations in reporting military operations. Organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel, the workshop aimed to enhance journalists’ professional skills in balancing press freedom with operational security in conflict zones.

The training, titled “Ethics and Security Considerations in the Media Coverage of Military Operations,” was opened by the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Mr. Polycarp Auta, who stressed the importance of journalistic integrity and understanding military protocols for accurate and responsible reporting.

Delivering the keynote address, Major General A.E. Abubakar, Grand Officer Commanding 3 Armoured Division and Commander, Operation Safe Haven, represented by Brigadier General M.O. Agbi, Chief of Staff, OPSH, emphasized the need for collaboration between the media and military. He highlighted the critical role journalists play in informing the public while maintaining sensitivity to national security concerns.

“Responsible journalism during military operations is crucial,” said Maj. Gen. Abubakar. “Sensational or inaccurate reporting erodes public trust and can jeopardize operational success.” He urged reporters to adhere to ethical standards, respecting the impact of their stories on affected families and communities.

Maj. Aliyu Danja, Acting Director of Public Relations for the 3 Division, also addressed participants, underscoring the media’s responsibility to provide balanced conflict reporting. He advised journalists to avoid biases, understand conflict dynamics, and report in ways that promote peace and harmony.

Former Editor-in-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr. Ephraim Sheyin, further elaborated on the importance of ethical journalism, calling for reporters to familiarize themselves with military structures and avoid sensationalism that could undermine public trust.

In a goodwill message, Plateau State Police Commissioner, CP Emmanuel Adesina, represented by Destu Ringle, urged journalists to focus on positive reporting to counter negative propaganda and foster peace. He lauded the organizers for their role in peacebuilding.

Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Chairman, Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo, expressed gratitude for the military’s support to journalists and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to balanced and ethical reporting that promotes national unity and security.

The event underscored the importance of fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between the media and military to ensure responsible journalism in conflict situations, contributing to peace and public trust.
