The acting Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University (PLASU), Prof. Shadrach Best, led a delegation to the Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Commission Plateau State to strengthen ties and seek enhanced support for the institution. The team met with the Commissioner, Chief Ephraim Usman, and local government representatives, addressing critical challenges and exploring opportunities for collaboration.

Prof. Shadrach Best emphasized the integral role of local governments as co-owners of PLASU and commended the commission for maintaining funding despite financial constraints. However, he highlighted pressing issues, including insufficient water supply, inadequate staff housing, transportation challenges, and growing security threats, particularly affecting off-campus students vulnerable to criminal activities. He appealed for increased collaboration, particularly in staff training, logistical support, and transportation solutions, expressing gratitude for the commission’s efforts while urging continued partnership.

Chief Ephraim Usman, in his response, expressed appreciation for the visit and acknowledged the university’s critical role in Plateau State’s educational landscape. He noted the financial pressures on local governments but assured that the commission is committed to addressing PLASU’s challenges. He pledged to increase support through remittances and explore partnerships with philanthropists and external stakeholders to improve infrastructure and security. Chief Usman also commended the state government’s leadership for providing autonomy to the commission, enabling proactive interventions.

Hon. Nicholas Nshe, Chairman of Shendam Local Government Council and representative of the 17 local government chairmen, reaffirmed the commitment of the local governments to supporting the university. He emphasized the importance of education in societal development and pledged action on key requests, particularly water supply and security improvements. Hon. Nshe highlighted past contributions, such as drilling boreholes, and assured that local governments would collaborate to provide sustainable solutions.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment of the commission, local governments, and the university to advancing education in Plateau State. With promises of increased collaboration and tangible interventions, the discussions offered hope for addressing PLASU’s challenges and fostering a secure and thriving academic environment. The Vice Chancellor, Commissioner, and local government representatives reaffirmed their collective dedication to the progress of Plateau State University and its contribution to the state’s development.
