On May 10, 2024, the Plateau State Youth Council, led by Comrade Emmanuel Jukun, made significant strides toward strengthening the relationship between the youth of Plateau and the academic community of the University of Jos. In a meeting marked by cordial discussions and forward-thinking proposals, the council met with university officials, including the respected Vice Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya, at the Register’s Conference Hall, Naraguta Campus.
The Youth Council, representing the vibrant and dynamic youth of Plateau State, Comrade Jukun alongside the PRO of the Council Comrade Walshak Kumen and other EXCO members emphasized the council’s commitment to the welfare and future of the university, which they consider a priority. Comrade Jukun expressed the council’s intention to forge a lasting partnership with the university, acknowledging the institution’s pivotal role in shaping the future of its students and, by extension, the state.
During the visit, the council did not shy away from addressing urgent matters, prominently discussing the concerning issue of the university’s ultimatum regarding unpaid school fees. With examinations looming, the Youth Council passionately appealed to the university management to extend leniency to students struggling financially. The request underscored the council’s role as a mediator and advocate for student welfare, urging the university to allow these students extra time to secure their fees, thereby preventing any disruption in their academic pursuits.
Responding to the council’s concerns, Vice Chancellor Ishaya expressed appreciation for the Youth Council’s involvement and insights. He spoke eloquently about the university’s mission to cater to the needs of the youth and the efforts being made to sustain high standards despite financial challenges. He highlighted the university’s proactive approach in reaching out to state governments and philanthropists to assist students with their fees, reflecting a community-driven solution to financial barriers affecting students.
Furthermore, Prof. Ishaya shared insights into the ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing student welfare, including scholarship programs and work schemes. These efforts demonstrate the university’s commitment to not only easing the financial burden on students but also to fostering an environment where they can thrive academically and personally.
