The Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), Mr. Jim Pam Wayas, has commended the taxpayers of Plateau State for their contributions to the revenue growth.
During the Taxpayers Month celebration in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area, Mr. Wayas expressed his appreciation to compliant taxpayers for their contribution to the state’s revenue growth. “We are here at the Jos South headquarters to honor our many taxpayers, especially those who have remained compliant, and to extend our gratitude,” he stated.
In 2024, Plateau State recorded significant growth in its revenue collection, moving from ₦25 billion to ₦31.14 billion. Mr. Wayas attributed this achievement to the dedication of taxpayers who remained compliant. “The growth has moved from ₦25 billion to ₦31.14 billion, and the only way we can give back to our taxpayers is to tell them thank you,” he added.
As part of the Taxpayers Month celebrations, the PSIRS organized various activities, including entertainment by Dantala and group, the registration of Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), sensitization on the importance of paying taxes, and distribution of hampers to attendees. The Chairman emphasized the need to appreciate taxpayers for their contribution to Plateau State’s development.
One of the key organizations honored during the event was the National Electricity Supply Company (NESCO), which has been providing electricity in Plateau State for over 100 years. “NESCO has been providing electricity, especially in the rural areas where mining activities happen, and they are one of the most tax-compliant agencies,” Mr. Wayas stated.
Mr. Wayas also commended NESCO for its dedication to maintaining its machinery, which has allowed the company to remain a significant contributor to the state’s revenue. “We come here to honor them and tell them that more is expected from them in 2025,” he remarked.
In addition to recognizing NESCO, Mr. Wayas mentioned that other compliant taxpayers would be acknowledged through social media, print, and broadcast media. “We will make sure that we propagate the good news of what they have been doing and their contributions to the growth of Plateau State,” he said.
Mr. Wayas assured the public that the PSIRS would continue to collect revenue to support government projects, particularly critical infrastructure. “What we do is collect revenue to help the government fund critical projects or infrastructure,” he explained.
Furthermore, Mr. Wayas discussed improvements in Plateau’s water supply, mentioning significant investments in the water project. “There is a huge paradigm shift for our water, and the water board is getting a new lift to address issues of water scarcity,” he said. He reaffirming the government’s dedication to using available resources to bring about positive change in Plateau State.
In response, Mr. Abraham Adama, the Human Resource and Administration Manager of NESCO, acknowledged the recognition given to the company for its longstanding contributions. He noted that NESCO’s over 100-year-old machinery continues to operate at 80% capacity. “I tell you the truth, that some of these machines that are about 100 years old are still generating up to 80% capacity to date,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Adama remained hopeful for improved partnerships with the government and other stakeholders. He emphasized that with better collaboration, NESCO could reach new heights. “With people like you for the government of the day, we also believe that we’re going to see some great improvement in terms of the partnership,” he stated.
Mr. Adama expressed his appreciation for the acknowledgment and reiterated NESCO’s readiness to continue its vital role in Plateau State’s development. “We really, really appreciate you,” he said, while also mentioning the company’s tradition of having important visitors sign a special book.
