Armed men believed to be herdsmen on Friday killed six farmers in Wereng village, 50kms southwest of Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
The attack at about 8:30pm Nigerian time in Riyom area, left two others severely injured.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers spoke Fulfulde and Hausa during the invasion. “We just left tge mining site about an hour earlier and were just seated discussing how to go about it next, with the rumours of attacks coming, then suddenly we heard gunshots,” Mr. Dauda Jatau, a wounded survivor said.
Rumours had circulated online from Wednesday night, of planned attacks in the village.
Mr. Mafeng Gwalson, the Chairman of Riyom confirmed the attack in a WhatsApp chat, but did not give details.
Senator Istifanus Gyang, of Plateau North Senatorial District “unequivocally” condemned the “unwarranted attack on peace loving and hard working citizens”.
The Senator in a press statement through his spokesperson, Musa Ashoms said the killers are not unknown to security agencies.
“It is sad therefore that people in Plateau North are repeatedly being hunted, ambushed and killed without any decisive action,” he said.
Mr. Gyang urged government and security agencies to be serious about “the safety and protection of law abiding citizens from terrorists, bandits and killer herdsmen.”
