Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano State, has formally left the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The NNPP’s official Twitter account acknowledged this on Tuesday, May 17, with a brief statement.

The statement, which reads: “Finally: Sen Ibrahim Shekarau Join Us”, was shared alongside a photo of Senator Shekarau and Senator Ibrahim Kwankwaso.

Recall that there had been some back and forth about Shekarau’s planned defection to the NNPP, with some power brokers in the APC said to be negotiating with the former governor not to leave the ‘broom party.’

However, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has been at the helm of the vanguard, working to ensure Shekarau’s defection from the APC to the NNPP.

On Sunday, Kwankwaso stormed the residence of Shekarau in Kano to work out details of the defection.

Meanwhile, Bola Tinubu, a presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), announced on Tuesday, May 17, that he will not resign from politics.

Tinubu stated that he will not leave politics until he is elected President of Nigeria.

He made the statement while courting APC delegates in Benue State ahead of the party’s primaries.

If elected, the APC National Leader promised to bring his vast experience to bear on government.

According to Tinubu: “I won’t retire from politics until I am the president of Nigeria. I will bring the experience of my leadership in Lagos state as a Governor to bear on my leadership style in Nigeria.

“There’s no contest between me and whoever will emerge as the candidate of the opposition PDP.”

The APC National Leader assured that if and when elected as president of the country, he would run a transparent and open government.

“I guarantee you that I will run a transparent, open government. Nigeria is rich. What we need is to redirect our resources and channel them in the right direction.”
