The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has launched an awareness rally ahead of the 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), set to hold in 2025 — marking the first time the prestigious sporting event will be hosted in North Central Nigeria.
The vibrant rally, which began at Hill Station Roundabout in Jos, attracted an impressive turnout of students, staff, alumni, and dignitaries who expressed enthusiasm and readiness for the forthcoming games.
Addressing participants, the Vice Chancellor of UNIJOS, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, described the rally as a symbolic countdown to the historic games. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to hosting what he called “the best NUGA ever.”
“We are here to show that UNIJOS is ready. Our students, staff, and the entire Plateau community are fully prepared to welcome contingents from all over Nigeria. We promised the nation the best NUGA yet, and we will deliver,” Prof. Ishaya stated.
He further assured visitors of the safety and hospitality of Jos, countering negative perceptions about the city.
“As you can see, Jos is peaceful and our people are excited. We are ready to host the nation,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor appreciated the Federal Government for its support through the National Sports Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing sports and youth development. He also revealed that UNIJOS has been designated a National Centre of Excellence in Sports, with new academic programs in Sports Science, Sports Medicine, and Exercise and Performance Studies aimed at expanding Nigeria’s sports industry and GDP contribution.
Prof. Ishaya also lauded Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, for the government’s financial and logistical support, noting that hosting over 10,000 visitors would significantly boost the state’s economy.
In his remarks, Gad Shamaki Peter, Global President of the UNIJOS Alumni Association, described sports as a unifying force and a powerful tool for youth empowerment. He said the upcoming games would highlight the potential of Nigerian youth and change the narrative about Plateau State by promoting peace and development.
Chairman of the NUGA Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Prof. Taye Obateru, added that the games would showcase the hospitality and vibrancy of Jos while strengthening collaborations that benefit both sports and business in the region.
With excitement building across the state, the 27th NUGA Games at UNIJOS are set to make history, uniting students nationwide, fostering national cohesion, and spotlighting Plateau State as a center of peace, hospitality, and sporting excellence.
