The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, is facing intense scrutiny as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) delves into allegations of financial misconduct totaling N355 million. This unfolding controversy has cast a shadow over the esteemed institution, sparking concerns about transparency and accountability within university leadership.

Recent reports from Sahara indicate that the EFCC, in a letter dated March 19, 2024, signed by Adebayo Adeniyi, Zonal Commander, Abuja, summoned the VC for interrogation. The commission requested Prof. Tanko to appear alongside Dr. Yusuf Abdullahi, the University’s Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, for an interview scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

In the letter titled ‘Re: Investigation Activities. Letter Of Invitation,’ with reference number CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/ZN/CTGI-PS.1/TA/VOL.18/200, the EFCC outlined their request for the VC to provide a response to their earlier communication dated December 27, 2023.

During the interrogation held on March 26, Prof. Tanko faced rigorous questioning from EFCC officials. He stands accused of allegedly diverting N355 million to various private accounts, purportedly to settle rental obligations for the university’s liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja, through a company named Kolo Global Concept Ltd, which he presented as the property owners.

However, according to a petition filed by some University staff members to the Minister of Education, the university already owned the liaison offices, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the transactions. The petition alleges that the funds were disbursed to different accounts at the direction of Prof. Tanko, leading to disputes among the involved parties.

Efforts to reach Prof. Tanko and the University’s public relations officer, Abdullahi B. Abdullahi, have been unsuccessful as they did not respond to calls or messages.

The unfolding saga underscores the importance of upholding integrity and transparency in university administration, and it highlights the necessity for thorough investigations to ensure accountability and safeguard public trust.”
