Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are among prominent opposition figures expected to participate in a major opposition summit scheduled for August 18, 2026, in Abuja.

The meeting is part of growing efforts to unite Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political leaders exploring ways to build a stronger platform capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The initiative is being facilitated by the G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians that has embarked on consultations with major opposition political parties and their leaders.

G100 Consults Opposition Parties

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the G100, the group said it had completed an initial round of consultations with leaders of six opposition political parties.

The parties consulted include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The G100 said its engagements involved national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates of the respective parties.

According to the coalition, the discussions were frank, constructive and encouraging, with participants recognising the need for greater cooperation among opposition forces ahead of the 2027 election.

Opposition Unity Takes Centre Stage

The consultations followed an open letter issued by the G100 on August 2, 2026, addressed to opposition leaders, leaders of thought, civil society organisations and Nigerians of good conscience.

The letter outlined what the group described as the “Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition.”

The doctrine is built around the argument that Nigeria’s democracy requires a credible opposition capable of effectively competing for the mandate of the Nigerian people.

The G100 said it deliberately kept its consultations away from the media to give political leaders the freedom to discuss sensitive issues without the pressure of premature public commentary.

The coalition explained that protecting the integrity of the discussions was more important than publicising every meeting.

August 18 Summit to Explore Opposition Cooperation

The G100 said preparations were now underway for a Summit of Opposition Parties, scheduled to take place in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18.

The summit is expected to provide a structured platform for opposition parties to discuss possible areas of cooperation and examine the difficult questions surrounding political alliance, accommodation, sacrifice and collective action.

However, the coalition stressed that it would not impose an outcome on the participating political parties.

It said its role was primarily to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and create an environment where opposition leaders could openly consider options for greater cooperation.

2027 Election and the Challenge of Fragmentation

The push for opposition unity comes amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The G100 argued that fragmentation among opposition parties could weaken their ability to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative at the ballot box.

According to the group, an effective opposition requires political leaders to look beyond individual ambitions and narrow party interests and consider the broader interests of the Nigerian people.

It maintained that any framework emerging from the ongoing discussions must recognise the legitimate interests of all participating parties while making the interests of Nigerians the overriding consideration.

G100 Calls for Sacrifice and Compromise

The coalition acknowledged that bringing Nigeria’s major opposition parties and political figures together would not be an easy task.

It said the process would require patience, courage, compromise and, most importantly, sacrifice from political leaders.

The G100 stressed that the recent consultations were only the beginning of a broader effort to facilitate opposition unity ahead of 2027.

The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to supporting discussions among Nigeria’s opposition parties in good faith and in what it described as the overriding interest of the country and its democracy.

With the August 18 summit approaching, attention is now turning to whether the various opposition blocs can overcome longstanding political differences and agree on a common strategy ahead of the 2027 Nigerian presidential election.
