FG announces Friday, Monday as public holidays for Easter Season

In honour of Easter celebrations, the Federal Government (FG) has declared Friday and Monday official holidays.

On behalf of the FG, Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola announced the holiday on Tuesday, April 12.

Aregbesola exhorted Christians to emulate the virtues of sacrifice, togetherness, forgiveness, kindness, love, peace, and patience, which were the attributes and practices of Jesus Christ, as exemplified by his ministry on earth, according to Shuaib Belgore, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.

Mr. Aregbesola also urged Christians and all Nigerians to take advantage of this year’s Easter celebrations to pray for an end to the security concerns plaguing the country.

The minister pledged that the FG will leave no stone unturned to guarantee that recent attacks by unwanted individuals on highways, airports, and railways are put to an end as soon as possible.

“Security is everybody’s business. I, therefore, urge Nigerians and foreigners resident in our country to display a high sense of citizenship and public-spiritedness at this critical time in the history of our country, by supporting the efforts of all security agencies in bringing peace and security of the lives and property of the citizenry,” the FG statement said.

Meanwhile, if elected president of Nigeria in 2023, Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers has committed to addressing the country’s festering insecurity and poverty.

He made the promise while speaking to delegates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Maiduguri on Monday, April 12.

Wike, who predicted that the PDP will win the presidential election, claimed that the APC had failed to address insecurity and economic security.

Because of the insecurity, he complained, individuals can no longer go to their farms or do genuine business.

“I came here today because there is a problem. And the problem is that Nigeria is dying and we must not allow Nigeria to die. We must rescue this country.

“So I came as a Nigerian, as a Member of People’s Democratic Party. As a party, I have never left from 1998 till now. As a party, I have worked for and will continue to work for, I believe that Nigeria has hope. So I want to run for the presidency of this country under the PDP.

“As a country, we do not have any other country to run to. So I am here to offer myself to solve most of the problems that this APC administration could not solve.

“Before we are only hearing of insecurity in Borno state, but now is all over the country. Hunger doesn’t know Muslims or Christians; insecurity does not know North or South.”

JTown’s Hoodrep Calls Out Reality Show Organizers for Sickle Cell Discrimination And Stigmatization

My name is EL-SHAMAH IGBANOI BENSON, I’m a 28 y/o actress, model, creative writer, fashionista extraordinaire, mother and so much more.

I’m a contestant on the Nevadabridgetv’s reality show “NaijaHoodRep” repping Jos, Plateau State, home of peace and tourism. I’m a sickle cell warrior, I’ve lived with, battled and survived sickle cell anemia my entire life. I’ve always lived and believed in the reality that condition is not a disability and in the possibility of living a long, healthy and full life, with the confidence to live my life to it’s fullest and pursue my dreams, maximize my potentials and achieving my goals and aspirations.

I’m currently on the verge of getting pulled out of the reality tv show, mainly on the grounds of my medical condition, “the doctors say I’m not fit to continue” but this is part of the stigma I’ve faced all my life as a Sickle cell warrior, I believe if the organizers knew I had SCD from beginning I would never have made it on the show in the first place, I would have been excluded, so due to fear of this stima I withheld the information and competed through series of auditions and trials to earn my spot on the show, fair and square.

I fell sick while on the show because I wasn’t on my routine drugs, as we weren’t allowed in the house with any drugs not prescribed by the in house doctor and since I was still trying to be strong and not excluded or give a chance I didn’t insist, but lo I fell sick while I the house and this has caused a panic and the fear that I may not be able to continue but I want the world to know I’ve survived worse and I’m still here, still fighting and trying. Leaving the contest without a fair chance would greatly affect my confidence, dash my hopes and dreams and make me a victim of the exact stima which I have battled with my entire life.

FEC Approves 12 New Varsities Amid ASUU Strike

FEC Approves 12 New Varsities Amid ASUU Strike

The Federal Government appears unconcerned about the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as President Muhammadu Buhari presided over a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) that approved the establishment of 12 new private universities.

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, who made the announcement on behalf of the Minister of Education, stated that the 12 private universities will be mentored by existing universities.

Aside from that, the new universities will receive mentoring on the recruitment of principal officers, academic, and administrative staff, as well as the availability of human and material resources for the start of any academic program, among other things.

Keep in mind, Some education stakeholders have criticized the government on numerous occasions for the proliferation of tertiary institutions while neglecting the old ones.

However, in justifying the latest action, Mohammed stated that Nigeria lacks adequate universities to accommodate the teeming population of youths seeking university education.

He stated that the memo was presented by the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, on behalf of the National Universities Commission (NUC), and it was approved by the cabinet.

Kano, Niger, Gombe, Sokoto, Delta, Abia, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are among the states that will benefit. “The memo for the issuance of provisional licenses for the establishment of 12 proposed private universities was approved by Council,” he said.

“The proposed private universities are Pen Resource University Gombe, Gombe State; Al-Ansar University, Gombe State; and Al-Ansar University, Gombe State.”

Maiduguri University, Borno State; Margaret Lawrence University, Delta State; Khalifa Ishaku Rabiu University Kano, Kano State; Sports University Idumuje Ugboko, Delta State; Bala Ahmed University Kano; Saisa University of Medical Sciences and Technology, Sokoto State; Nigerian-British University Hasa, Abia State; Peter University Acina-Onene, Anambra State; Newgate University, Minna, Niger

He indicated that relevant government ministries and agencies were collaborating with striking unions such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) to end the strike.

When asked to provide compelling reasons,

He questioned why the government would approve more universities while ASUU is still on strike, saying, “Can we say that because ASUU is on strike, we will not have new universities when we know that today, 65 percent of eligible students in the universities are just roaming the streets?” When we consider that there are approximately 5,000 Nigerian students in Ukraine alone today.

“I believe the total number of Nigerian students outside of Nigeria is around 165,000.” We have a population of approximately 200 million people and only about 200 universities, whereas countries such as Indonesia have approximately 1,200 universities.

We cannot sit back and do nothing because ASUU is on strike and will not expand our educational facilities.”

You inquired whether the ASUU issue had been discussed.

in the council? We have ministers and agencies working full-time on ASUU and labor unrest concerns every day. No, you do not discuss every issue in Council.

“However, I can assure you that no government will simply sleep and pretend that ASUU is not on strike, but that there is engagement going on.”the meeting of the FEC.
