The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has strongly rejected the call by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) for the removal of Professor Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a press statement issued on Thursday, CAN described the demand as an unwarranted politicisation of religion and a deliberate attempt to undermine a key national institution. The association warned against introducing religious sentiments into Nigeria’s electoral process, noting that such actions could threaten national unity and democratic stability.

The statement, jointly signed by the Chairman of CAN in the North, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, and the Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, emphasised that the leadership of INEC should be evaluated strictly on competence, integrity, and compliance with the Constitution, not on religious affiliation.

CAN further cautioned that targeting public office holders based on perceived religious bias sets a dangerous precedent capable of inflaming sectarian tensions, especially ahead of future elections.

The association urged Nigerians to resist attempts to undermine public confidence in INEC and called on all stakeholders to allow the electoral body to function independently, free from undue pressure or intimidation.
