In a bid to fortify Nigeria’s information landscape against the scourge of fake news, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) partnered with Tomruk iHub Multiverse and DAFUDA to orchestrate a strategic training program. Held from April 23rd to 25th, 2024, at the prestigious Nigerian Army Resource Centre Asokoro, this initiative aimed to arm media practitioners, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), community leaders, and government officials with the tools to combat misinformation effectively.

The theme, “COMBATING FAKE NEWS IN THE SECURITY, INTELLIGENCE ECONOMIC AND PUBLIC SERVICE ECOSYSTEM FOR ECONOMIC PROGRESS AND NATIONAL PEACE,” underscored the critical importance of countering false narratives to safeguard both economic prosperity and national harmony.

Seasoned experts spearheaded the training, including luminaries like Odeyemi Olayiwole, CEO of Inspired to Lead; Lateef Sani from the Center for Journalism and Innovative Development; Job David Ayuba, CEO of Tomruk iHub Multiverse; Austin Aigbe, the Lead Consultant at DebunkITNG; and David Akoji, Director of Special Duties and States Operations at the NOA.

Through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and vibrant discussions, participants delved into the intricacies of identifying and debunking fake news. Drawing from diverse sectors such as Defense Headquarters, Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), National Judicial Institute, Plateau State Government, Ministry of Petroleum, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the training fostered a collaborative environment where expertise converged to confront the common enemy of misinformation.

The imperative for such a program stemmed from the realization of the detrimental impact of fake news on perceptions and its potential to undermine peace-building efforts within Nigeria. By arming stakeholders with knowledge and skills, the initiative aimed to erect a bulwark against the tide of false information, thereby fostering a more informed and resilient society.

As participants departed from the intensive training, they carried with them not only newfound knowledge but also a shared commitment to combatting fake news and safeguarding the fabric of Nigerian society. In the ongoing battle against misinformation, initiatives like these serve as beacons of hope, illuminating the path towards a future where truth reigns supreme.
