A coordinated overnight raid across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis has uncovered a harrowing network of sexual exploitation, leading to the rescue of dozens of minors. The operation, described by officials as a mirror of deep societal ills, freed young victims—some as young as 11—from brothels, hotels, and motels.

The multi-agency Task Force Committee on Human Trafficking, comprising representatives from the Plateau State Ministry of Justice, NAPTIP, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NACTAL, the NDLEA, the NSCDC, and the Nigeria Police Force, executed the sweeping raids.

Among those rescued were girls aged 11 to 17, including persons living with disabilities (deaf and non-verbal), a breastfeeding mother, and a pregnant woman. Preliminary findings indicate a pattern of minors being drugged and exploited, often late at night in environments where they should not be.

The Chairman of the Committee, Plateau State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Barr. Philemon Audu Daffi, called the situation a “painful indictment of societal failure.”

“What we are seeing is a mirror of what our society has become,” Daffi stated. “Many of these young people did not choose this path freely. Insecurity, economic hardship, broken homes, and irresponsible parenting have all contributed.”

He urged the task force to act with fairness and conscience, emphasizing that the rescued victims “are not written off; they still have a future.” Daffi also issued a strong warning against compromise, affirming that the law would be applied regardless of social connections.

Mrs. Vivien Ebere Festuu of NACTAL highlighted the primary concern for the lives and futures of the children. “These are children who should be in school, under the care of their parents, not roaming the streets at night and being exploited,” she said, calling on parents and guardians to take greater responsibility.

The Secretary of the Committee, Barr. David Nenfort Yilji, warned hotel operators that any establishment found harboring minors would be shut down. He expressed confidence that the intervention could redirect the lives of the rescued victims.

The raids targeted numerous establishments across Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas. The rescued victims are currently undergoing screening, after which the government will provide rehabilitation and support.

Officials stress that this operation marks the beginning of a sustained effort to dismantle exploitation networks and serves as a urgent call for collective societal reflection and responsibility.
