In a bold move to tackle illegal mining, environmental degradation, and rising security threats, Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has signed Executive Order 001 of 2025, suspending all mining activities across the state.

The governor made this announcement during a stakeholders’ engagement at the Twin Theater, New Government House, Jos, attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, local government chairmen, and representatives from mining communities.

Governor Mutfwang stated that the suspension was necessary to curb illegal mining, child labor, and land degradation, while also addressing security concerns such as the influx of unregulated foreign miners, banditry, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and illegal firearms possession.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the State, it is my duty to ensure the safety of our people. Given the rising security concerns associated with illegal mining, we must take decisive action. All mining operations are hereby suspended until further notice,” Governor Mutfwang declared.

To ensure a structured and sustainable mining sector, the state government will collaborate with the Federal Government, local authorities, host communities, and mineral rights holders to establish a monitoring framework and enforce Community Development Agreements (CDA) that guarantee socio-economic benefits for host communities.

Technical Committee on Mining Reform Inaugurated

As part of the new mining reforms, Governor Mutfwang inaugurated a Technical Committee on Artisanal Mining, chaired by the Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Philemon Dafi. The committee has been tasked with:
1. Verifying mining licenses to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
2. Gathering data on mining sites for effective resource management.
3. Regulating illegal mining to mitigate environmental and security risks.
4. Designating approved mining areas to prevent encroachment on residential lands.

Governor Mutfwang assured stakeholders that the suspension is not aimed at stifling economic activities but rather at ensuring responsible and sustainable mining practices that benefit Plateau State and its people.

Traditional Rulers Pledge Support

The Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba, commended the governor for taking decisive action. He pledged the support of traditional rulers in implementing the Executive Order to protect the people and future of Plateau State.

With this move, the Plateau State Government reaffirms its commitment to security, environmental protection, and economic growth, ensuring that the state’s mineral resources serve the collective good.
