In response to the changing dynamics of conflict influenced by social media, journalists from Jos, Plateau State, participated in a crucial one-day workshop aimed at promoting Conflict-sensitive Reporting for Media Practitioners.

Hosted by the Peace Action for Rapid, Transformative Nigerian Early Response (PARTNER) initiative, funded by USAID through Mercy Corps, the workshop aimed to arm journalists with the skills needed to integrate conflict sensitivity into their reporting. The participants were members of the Plateau Peace Media Network.

Danjuma Saidu Dawup, Chief of Party for PARTNER, highlighted the significant impact of social media on conflict dynamics, noting how conflicts can escalate from online disputes to real-world violence. He underscored the necessity for media to work closely with peace-building organizations to amplify peace efforts.

The workshop focused on cultivating a beneficial relationship between media and peace initiatives, enabling the spread of peace-oriented messages to broader audiences. Dawup hopes that media professionals will use their platforms to extend the reach of traditional peace efforts and promote harmony.

Chrysantus Lapang, Mercy Corps’ Technical Manager for Early Warning and Response on the PARTNER project, stressed the essential role journalists play in conflict prevention and resolution. He pointed out the importance of conflict sensitivity and awareness of early warning indicators, as journalists are key in informing the public and shaping perceptions.

Lapang also noted the crucial role journalists have in early warning and response systems, where accurate reporting can curb the spread of misinformation and prevent violence. He called on journalists to focus on early indicators of conflict to help authorities act before situations worsen.

The workshop offered journalists invaluable tools and perspectives for tackling the complex issues in conflict reporting, emphasizing the promotion of peace, understanding, and responsible journalism, and fostering collaborations between the media and peace-building sectors.
