The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State have vowed to take decisive actions that could disrupt economic activities across the country if President Bola Tinubu does not revoke the emergency rule imposed on the state.
In a joint statement, the unions condemned the federal government’s decision, stating that it has negatively impacted workers by halting salary payments.
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18 following political unrest in the oil-rich region. The move led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. Retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the state’s sole administrator.
Labour leaders warned that if the situation is not addressed swiftly, they will embark on nationwide protests and industrial action to safeguard workers’ rights and democratic governance.
