Liz Truss will become the next prime minister of Britain.
The British Conservative Party announced on Monday that its members have picked Liz Truss to succeed Boris Johnson.
Truss, 47, will be the UK’s third female prime minister following Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher.
She also comes into office as Brits tighten their belts in response to double-digit inflation and skyrocketing energy prices.
Truss vowed to deliver a “bold plan” to cut taxes, grow the UK economy and deal with spiralling energy costs.
“I will also deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills,” Truss said as she was announced on Monday.
Rishi Sunak, a former chancellor of the Exchequer whose resignation in July started the unceremonious removal of Mr. Johnson, lost to Ms. Truss. Her win was largely anticipated in recent weeks when she acquired a commanding lead in the polls; with a margin of 57.4 percent to 42.6 percent.
Following his loss in the final Conservative leadership ballot, former finance minister Rishi Sunak tweeted his support for Liz Truss.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this campaign,” Sunak Tweeted.
“I’ve said throughout that the Conservatives are one family. It’s right we now unite behind the new PM, Liz Truss, as she steers the country through difficult times.”
Recall that Boris Johnson was compelled to announce his resignation in July after being embroiled in a scandal for months. Meanwhile, he will fly to Scotland on Tuesday to present his resignation to Queen Elizabeth.
