The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Wednesday, March 18; suspended its orientation camp activities over across Nigeria over the spread of coronavirus.
The ongoing orientation for Batch A Stream 1 corps members, which was supposed to end 30, March 2020 has now been cut short 12 days earlier.
Corps members in some of the Batch A orientation camps which started last week confirmed this development to 1st News.
According to them, NYSC is in the process of dispatching them to their places of primary assignment.
A statement by NYSC management reads: “Sequel to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic which led to the cancellation of the national sports festival; management of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme wishes to announce the suspension of the on-going orientation course for the 2020 Batch “A” stream 1 corps members.
“Therefore, the corps members shall be posted to commence their primary assignments forthwith; while they shall be invited back to the orientation camps when the situation improves; just like it happened a few years ago when the nation was confronted by the Ebola virus threat.
“Management wishes to state that no corps member or camp official has contracted the virus.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Government on Tuesday inaugurated a presidential task force. This is to monitor the development of coronavirus across the country and the world.
Inaugurating the committee on coronavirus monitoring; Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) said the composition of the task force would enable Nigeria in its multi-sectoral and intergovernmental approach to the national response.
“Actions taken by governments in different parts of the world point to the fact that coronavirus constitutes a major threat to humanity; and requires that our response must be firm, scientific, methodical and strategic.
”At this point, let me convey the appreciation of President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Health; Dr Osagie Ehanire and his team for efficiently rising to the challenge thus far,” he said.
