The 2025 edition of the Nzem Berom Festival in Plateau State has been hailed as a remarkable celebration of heritage, unity, and the indomitable spirit of Berom women. Held under the theme “Celebrating the Prowess, Gallantry and Resilience of Berom Women: Past and Present,” this year’s festival honored the immense contributions of women to the growth, preservation, and development of the Berom nation.

The event drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including state and federal officials, traditional rulers, and cultural enthusiasts. The festival paid tribute to a host of celebrated women including Ngo Naomi Vou Jugu, Ngo Hannatu Chollom, Justice Jummai Chundung Sankey, Ngo Josephine Chundung Piyo, and former Minister Ngo Sarah Reng Ochekpe. These icons were recognized for their roles in nation-building, justice, health, governance, and humanitarian service.

Senator Simon Mwadkwon, Chairman of the Main Planning Committee and former Senate Minority Leader, described the festival as a historic platform to reinforce the beauty of Berom identity and cultural strength. “This year’s theme is not only timely but symbolic, as it pays tribute to the courageous spirit of our women, past and present,” he remarked. He also extended gratitude to Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, who was represented by Hajiya Fatima Tajudeen Abbas, and to His Majesty, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, for the privilege to lead the planning once more.

In a stirring address, Arc. Samuel Nanchang Jatau, representing Governor Dr. Kefas Agbu, applauded the celebration of women’s legacy. “The gallantry of Berom women remains a beacon of hope and strength,” he said, reflecting on personal memories and highlighting figures like Justice Sankey and Sarah Ochekpe. He emphasized the need to preserve cultural heritage and commended the festival for spotlighting unsung heroines whose daily sacrifices strengthen society.

His Majesty, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, presented certificates of honor to distinguished women and bestowed the revered title De Teyei on Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her humanitarian efforts. He seized the moment to address pressing social issues, especially the growing menace of child trafficking. “This is shameful and must be confronted. Government must empower the Ministry of Women Affairs and put systems in place to monitor orphanages,” he warned, calling on traditional leaders to take an active stand.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented at the event, praised the deep cultural roots and leadership of Berom women in community development and peacebuilding. “They have played vital roles in agriculture, enterprise, and the sustenance of our values,” he said. He prayed that the festival would usher in a peaceful and productive farming season.

In her goodwill message, Hajiya Fatima Abbas conveyed Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s admiration for the cultural pride demonstrated by the Berom people. “This festival aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in food security and women’s empowerment,” she said.

Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Caroline Panglang Dafur, speaking on behalf of Dr. Ima’an Suleiman Ibrahim, emphasized the significance of culture as both a legacy and a path forward. “Let us protect our heritage while promoting peace, justice, and inclusion,” she urged.

President of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO), Da Gyang Dudu Dalyop, closed the event with heartfelt gratitude. “We have witnessed unity, cultural pride, and an unforgettable celebration of our women,” he said. He also announced progress on the Berom Technology Hub, adding, “We look forward with hope to an even greater celebration in 2026.”

Attendees expressed similar sentiments. One guest said, “It’s inspiring to see our women celebrated this way. They truly are the backbone of our community.” Another added, “From the music to the messages, everything about this year’s Nzem Berom was powerful.”

Indeed, Nzem Berom 2025 was more than a festival—it was a heartfelt tribute to the women who have shaped, and continue to shape, the future of the Berom people.
