Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attributing his decision to growing internal disputes, persistent legal battles, and what he described as an increasingly toxic political atmosphere.

Obi made the announcement on Sunday through a statement posted on his official X account, revealing that the decision came after deep personal reflection following church service.

He spoke candidly about the emotional weight of public service, noting that many Nigerians often fail to appreciate the private struggles faced by individuals committed to genuine leadership.

According to him, Nigeria’s political landscape has become deeply troubling, marked by insecurity, intimidation, constant scrutiny, and discouragement, making it increasingly difficult for sincere leaders to thrive.

Obi also expressed disappointment over what he termed betrayal from some allies, lamenting that individuals who publicly identify with him sometimes distance themselves behind closed doors or even join in criticizing him unfairly.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that throughout his political journey, he has remained committed to humility, service, and uplifting others, insisting that leadership should be about sacrifice and nation-building rather than oppression or personal gain.

Clarifying his departure, Obi stated that his decision was not motivated by any personal grievances against the ADC leadership. He specifically acknowledged the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing them as respected leaders for whom he still holds deep regard.

However, Obi noted that the same political interference and internal instability that plagued his time in the Labour Party now appear to be resurfacing within the ADC. He pointed to endless court cases, factional struggles, suspicion, and division as signs that the party was drifting away from its core mission.

He further revealed that even in political spaces where he had invested sincerely, he often felt isolated and unfairly blamed for challenges beyond his control.

Despite stepping away, Obi maintained that his commitment to Nigeria remains unwavering. He stressed that his ambition has never been about occupying high office, but about building a nation where citizens can live safely, feed their families, and enjoy dignity.

Reaffirming his hope for the country, Obi declared that Nigeria can still achieve competent, compassionate, and just leadership.

“A New Nigeria is Possible,” he concluded.
