In a recent interview with Yakubu Taddy of Media Temple Global, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), detailed the Commission’s plans to incorporate technology and ensure inclusivity in the forthcoming elections.

Hon. Cishak highlighted the importance of technology in reducing electoral malpractice. “We are introducing software for accreditation and collation at both the local government and final stages. This approach aims to minimize errors and tensions associated with result manipulation,” he explained.

Addressing inclusivity, Hon. Cishak emphasized the Commission’s commitment to supporting people with disabilities. “We have waived nomination fees for people with disabilities, requiring only a minimal administrative fee of ₦250,000 for chairmanship and ₦100,000 for council positions,” he stated.

On encouraging women’s participation, Hon. Cishak noted, “Women are subject to the same fees as men, but we are actively encouraging their involvement, reflecting the belief that women can equally contribute to governance.”

Security during elections remains a critical concern. Hon. Cishak introduced the Plateau State Advisory Consultative Committee on Election Security (PLACCES), co-chaired by the Commissioner of Police. This committee, comprising representatives from various security agencies and community organizations, aims to ensure a secure electoral process.

Recognizing the unique challenges in certain areas, PLASIEC plans to involve local vigilante groups and other non-state actors where necessary. “In places like Langtang South, local vigilante groups play a crucial role due to their deep understanding of the area,” he added.

Hon. Cishak outlined measures to address logistical challenges, including collaboration with transport unions and the establishment of Ward Area Centers to ensure timely distribution of election materials. “This approach aims to prevent delays and related security issues,” he explained.

The Commission has enhanced its media engagement strategy by forming a dedicated media unit. “We have included members from major media outlets and social media volunteers to ensure comprehensive coverage and public awareness,” Hon. Cishak said.

Despite rising costs, the Commission is implementing cost-effective measures. “We are leveraging the use of presiding officers’ Android phones for accreditation, providing stipends instead of purchasing new devices,” he noted.

Reflecting on experiences from other states, Hon. Cishak emphasized the importance of timely material deployment and adequate publicity. “We are improving these areas to ensure a smooth electoral process,” he assured.

To ensure accountability, PLASIEC is establishing a robust ICT system for real-time monitoring of activities and responsibilities. “This system will enable us to track progress and address issues promptly,” Hon. Cishak concluded.

The upcoming elections promise to be a significant step forward for Plateau State, with PLASIEC’s comprehensive plans aiming to enhance transparency, inclusivity, and security.
