The Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, along with his team, briefed Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) today on the commission’s ongoing efforts to ensure a transparent, free, fair, and credible local government election scheduled for October 9, 2024.

During the session, Hon. Cishak highlighted the commission’s progress, emphasizing their commitment to delivering an election that meets global standards. Among the key achievements mentioned were the launch of PLASIEC’s official website, the publication of election notices, the collection of nomination forms, and the verification and screening of candidates. Notably, candidate information will be accessible online at the PLASIEC website, plasiec.ng. Additionally, an online application process for ad-hoc staff was introduced to enhance transparency.

Hon. Cishak also revealed the commission’s adoption of the “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) system for voter verification, aimed at curbing over-voting and ensuring the principle of “one man, one vote.”

CSOs raised several concerns, including the inclusion of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the voting process, the deployment of new technologies, and the need for increased public awareness about the election procedures, particularly regarding the collation of results.

In response, Hon. Cishak assured that the commission is committed to collaboration with CSOs, highlighting that polling units for displaced communities would be stationed at Coalition Centres, ensuring that IDPs are not disenfranchised. He also encouraged CSOs to offer suggestions to improve the process, acknowledging that the commission is open to constructive criticism and collaboration to ensure a successful election.

Hon. Cishak reiterated the commission’s dedication to integrity and transparency, noting that PLASIEC has taken significant steps, including the amendment of the 2016 Electoral Law, to close loopholes and align with the 2022 Electoral Act. He urged CSOs to emphasize the positive developments within the commission while continuing to hold them accountable.

The meeting concluded with Hon. Cishak expressing gratitude for the CSOs’ contributions and reaffirming PLASIEC’s resilience and readiness to conduct a credible election.
