The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), led by its Chairman, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, former Deputy Governor of Plateau State and erstwhile Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos.
The delegation, which included commissioners, the secretary, and senior management staff of the commission, visited the Tyoden family residence to commiserate over the loss of a revered academic, statesman, and community leader.
Hon. Cishak described Prof. Tyoden as “a giant in the land,” noting that his death is a significant loss not only to Plateau State but also to Nigeria. He praised the late professor’s immense contributions to education, politics, and public service. “His wealth of experience is needed now more than ever,” he said, adding that Prof. Tyoden was a gifted teacher who made complex ideas simple. “If Prof teaches you and you do not understand, I wonder who will also take you in that lesson for you to comprehend,” he remarked.
Recalling Prof. Tyoden’s influence in the political landscape, Hon. Cishak highlighted his pivotal role in the 2015 elections in Plateau State, where he mobilized support and contributed to changing the narrative of leadership in the state. The PLASIEC chairman also offered prayers for peace and strength for the family and encouraged them to take comfort in Prof. Tyoden’s impactful legacy. “In everything, we should give thanks to God,” he quoted, urging everyone present to reflect on the meaning and purpose of life.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, Gyemu Tyolden thanked PLASIEC for the visit and the comforting words. He described the late professor as a man of many parts—an academic, administrator, politician, and family man—whose absence would be sorely felt. He noted that Prof. Tyoden’s legacy in academia, particularly his achievements as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, would continue to speak for him. “Pick the good one that you want to emulate… do your best and leave the rest to God,” Gyemu said, urging all in public service to live with integrity and purpose.
Born on May 4, 1950, in Mangu Local Government Area, Professor Sonni Tyoden was a respected scholar and public servant whose life touched countless others through education and leadership.
