The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has presented an insurance cheque along with additional financial support to the family of Augustine Musa, an ad-hoc staff who lost his life during the October 9th local government election. The presentation, held at the PLASIEC Headquarters in Jos, was attended by representatives from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the insurance company responsible for the coverage.

In his remarks, PLASIEC Chairman, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, expressed deep sympathy for the deceased’s family, praying for divine comfort. He emphasized the commission’s responsibility in supporting young volunteers who serve during elections, stating, “The life of human beings is not in our hands, it’s in God’s hands. After all, He created us. Nothing happens to us without Him allowing it to happen.” He reassured the public of PLASIEC’s commitment to ensuring the safety of election personnel and securing insurance coverage for both permanent and ad-hoc staff. He also announced the commission’s decision to provide additional financial assistance to the family as a gesture of support.

Daggwan Ngau, Branch Manager of Country and City Insurance Brokers Limited, described insurance as a trust between organizations and insurers, affirming that it works effectively when properly implemented. He lauded PLASIEC for prioritizing group life and accident insurance for staff, calling it a wise decision given the risks associated with election duties. He urged other organizations to adopt similar policies to protect their workforce.

Rev. Chris Damcher, Chairman of the CSOs in Plateau State, praised PLASIEC for this unprecedented initiative, noting that such post-election compensations are rare even at the national level. He called for the practice to be sustained and replicated across Nigeria, stating that it should serve as a learning point for other states. He emphasized that CSOs, having witnessed the event, would ensure transparency in similar future occurrences.

Aminu Hadi Muhammad, IPAC Secretary, commended PLASIEC for following proper procedures in executing the insurance policy. He thanked the chairman and the commission for their dedication, extending heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family while praying for God’s comfort in their time of grief.

The deceased’s father, Musa Akebok, expressed gratitude to PLASIEC for their concern and support, acknowledging their efforts in assisting his family. He prayed for God’s guidance and blessings upon the commission, hoping they continue their good work for the benefit of the people.

In her closing remarks, PLASIEC Commissioner for Welfare and Security, Theresa Kaze, praised the chairman for his persistence in ensuring the family was compensated. She applauded the commission’s dedication and offered words of consolation to the bereaved family, wishing all attendees a safe journey home.

The event highlighted PLASIEC’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and set a precedent for election management bodies in Nigeria.
