The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) have been widely praised for organizing a credible, transparent, and peaceful election, setting a new standard for democratic processes in Nigeria. During a recent event, Rev. Joseph Bot, Plateau State Coordinator of the British Council Active Citizens, expressed deep appreciation to the state government and PLASIEC for the flawless execution of the election, which was free from the violence and irregularities that had plagued previous elections.
Rev. Bot highlighted the significant contrast between the recent Plateau elections and past exercises in Nigeria, which were often characterized by bloodshed and political manipulation. Despite expectations of chaos, the elections were peaceful and democratic, with PLASIEC playing a critical role in ensuring fairness. By engaging all relevant stakeholders—including political parties, civil society, and security agencies—PLASIEC created a transparent process that gained the trust of the electorate.
In his remarks, Rev. Bot also praised the leadership of the state’s governor for upholding the democratic process despite political pressures. He noted that even opposition parties, such as the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), won seats without interference, further demonstrating the fairness of the election. According to him, the Plateau elections now serve as a template that other Nigerian states should follow, signaling hope for a more democratic future across Africa.
Barr. Pam Gyang Davou, Secretary of PLASIEC, responded to the British Council Active Citizens, emphasizing the commission’s dedication to democratic integrity. He conveyed apologies on behalf of the PLASIEC Chairman, who was in Abuja presenting a paper on lessons learned from the Plateau State elections at an event hosted by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). Gyang expressed pride in PLASIEC’s independence and highlighted how the Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, empowered the commission to function without political interference. This allowed the commission to conduct a fair and transparent election.
Gyang further credited the success of the election to the collaboration between PLASIEC, political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies. He emphasized the role of PLACCES (Plateau State Advisory Consultative Committee on Electoral Security) in ensuring peace throughout the process. Additionally, Gyang reassured the public of PLASIEC’s commitment to transparency, refusing to announce results before they were fully collated.
Looking ahead, Gyang welcomed constructive criticism, emphasizing that PLASIEC is committed to improving future elections. He also acknowledged the role of the electoral tribunal in resolving any grievances, ensuring that justice is served and the democratic process remains intact.
