In commemoration of this year’s World Social Media Day, the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association (PLABOMA) held a hybrid event at Kefiano Creative Hub. Themed “Unity in Diversity: Connecting Hearts Across the Globe” and sub-themed “Social Media as a Wealth Creation Tool,” the event brought together social media professionals to discuss the significant role of social media in modern society.

The Director-General of Plateau Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), Datong Gwaman, highlighted the transformative power of social media. He noted that the integration of technology into social interaction has revolutionized the dissemination of news and the unification of people with similar interests. Gwaman emphasized the importance of using social media responsibly to gain financial benefits and maintain credibility within the digital space.

“Social media has brought us closer together and united us by diluting cultures and bringing people of similar interests together. It is crucial for individuals to find creative ways to monetize their online presence to sustain their engagement in the space,” Gwaman said.

PLABOMA Chairman Friday Bako also addressed the gathering, underscoring social media’s ability to bridge geographical gaps and influence cultural trends and public opinion. He urged social media influencers and content creators to continue using their platforms to foster unity and promote positive societal change.

“Social media has significantly transformed our lives, enabling us to stay connected, showcase our talents, and create wealth. It is a powerful tool that molds public opinion and influences government policies,” Bako stated.

Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, called on social media practitioners to act professionally and promote the state’s development. He highlighted the need for accurate reporting and the importance of verifying information before dissemination.

“It is time for us to work together to change the narrative of Plateau State. We must prioritize the state’s interests and ensure the responsible use of social media to promote peace and harmonious living,” Bere emphasized.

The event featured critical discussion sessions, including “Leveraging Social Media for Personal and Professional Growth,” facilitated by prolific Blogger/Multimedia Expert consultant Matthew Tegha, and “How to Monetize Various Social Media Platforms,” facilitated by Social Media Expert, Herbert Gomagallah. The sessions aimed to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills to maximize the potential of social media for personal and professional advancement.

Overall, the World Social Media Day event by PLABOMA highlighted the importance of responsible social media usage, the potential for wealth creation, and the transformative impact of digital platforms on society.
