In a significant move to accelerate sustainable development, Plateau State Governor has reinforced partnerships with Germany during a high-level meeting with the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Annette Günther, in Abuja. The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in critical areas such as healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, and peacebuilding.
The Governor expressed appreciation for Germany’s continued support, particularly in empowering women and youth through modern agricultural training programs. He highlighted Plateau State’s vast agricultural potential and stressed the importance of foreign investment and knowledge transfer to increase productivity, create jobs, and improve food security across the region.
A key outcome of the meeting was Plateau State’s active participation in the upcoming Nigeria-Germany Cultural Exchange Program. Additionally, the Governor announced plans to revitalize the creative sector, including the reconstruction of the Luka Bentu Indoor Theatre, a project set to receive significant attention this year.
In the healthcare sector, the Governor emphasized the need to upgrade medical infrastructure, train healthcare professionals, and integrate renewable energy solutions into hospitals to enhance service delivery. He called on Germany to leverage its expertise in healthcare and sustainable energy to support these initiatives.
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the administration’s development agenda. The Governor revealed ongoing discussions with the Federal Government to expand the Yakubu Gowon Airport runway, aiming to transform it into a cargo hub for exporting agricultural produce to Europe and beyond. This initiative is expected to open new economic opportunities for local farmers.
The Governor also sought Germany’s assistance in advancing ICT infrastructure in Plateau State, citing ongoing collaborations with the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. These efforts aim to build a robust digital ecosystem that fosters innovation and creates employment opportunities for the youth.
Ambassador Günther praised the Governor’s vision and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Plateau State’s development goals. She noted that over 4,000 Plateau farmers—40% of whom are women—have already benefited from German-funded agricultural training programs. The Ambassador also encouraged the state to explore additional opportunities in education, including student exchange programs.
Germany’s support extends to peacebuilding efforts, with the German Development Agency (GIZ) funding the Peace Corps Project. This initiative aligns with Plateau State’s peace and security agenda, aiming to strengthen conflict resolution mechanisms and promote lasting peace in the region.
