Soyinka slams NBC over query issued to Channels TV on alleged anti-Buhari interview

The renowned Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has berated the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission over its harassment of Channels TV and its journalists for the airing of an alleged anti-Buhari interview involving the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

However, in his reaction during a journalists conference on Friday, August 27, Soyinka slammed the move by the NBC which is akin to “a media war.”

“Who decides professionalism? Is it NBC or mass communication fora? It is Channels TV; it can be anyone. This is the first time I am seeing a kind of query the media is getting. This is one of the most semi-illiterate queries that I have ever seen. Next time, those letters should be thrown into the garbage bin. This should be stopped as soon as possible.

“We have a responsibility to tell the government that next time any media institution is sanctioned on this trivial or ludicrous ground, we will fulfill our responsibility by mobilising the nation to boycott all government media and we shall wage this media war against the government.

“Decree Number 4 has no place in a democracy and it is about time we emphasise that both in language and in the act,” he said.

The Nobel laureate also criticised last Saturday’s carnival-like wedding of President Buhari’s son, Yusuf, in Kano, saying it was wrong to have organised the wedding in that manner when some school children were in the kidnappers’ den.

Soyinka said: “There was a carnival of a wedding in Kano; the president’s child was getting married. But some schoolchildren are kidnapped. This is not what I understand of leadership. I am not saying the president’s children should not get married. I had made the mistake of thinking it would have been sufficient to give these children money and say go to Dubai and have a good time there.

“He should set an example. The president seems not to hear things. Virtually the nation is screaming we do not want open cattle grazing. Then comes a new version of RUGA with the president sending his agent out to go and map out grazing routes. So, why is this president obsessed about something that is being rejected?

“The obsession to the extent that people who are rational begin to wonder if it is all about cattle or there is an agenda we don’t know about. Conspiracy theories abound when the leadership is pursuing interest against the people.”

Nigerians react to FG’s hammer on Channels TV for IPOB interview

Nigerians have reacted to the fine of N5 million slammed on frontline TV station, Channels TV by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The interview in question was with Emma Powerful, the spokesman of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Channels TV was fined over a breach of the Broadcasting Code.

In a letter signed by its Acting Director-General, Armstrong Idachaba; the NBC complained about the Channels TV 7pm live broadcast programme of Sunday, April 25, 2021. The NBC DG told the Managing Director of Channels TV that the TV station erred by allowing a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to make secessionist and also inciting declarations without caution.

The regulator accused the news channel of allowing the guest speaker to make derogatory, false; as well as misleading statements about the Nigerian Army, despite being proscribed by a court of law.

Emma Powerful had fielded a series of questions from his interviewer in which he addressed the recent killing of a commander of IPOB by security forces in Imo State. Emma Powerful had declared that the commander, known as Ikonson Commander, was set up.

Further, he had declared that the Nigerian Army lacked the capacity to invade the camps of IPOB; stating instead that the commander was ambushed after being lured out by some prominent politicians. In addition, Emma Powerful claimed that the deceased commander had rejected the offer of Imo Governor, Hope Uzodinma to head the newly formed South East regional security outfit, Ebube Agu.

Meanwhile, the action of the Federal Government has drawn intense reactions from Nigerians. Consequently, a number of users have taken to the micro-blogging site, Twitter to react. Indeed, a school of thought had declared the fine on Channels TV as a case of hypocrisy and double standard; even as it accused the FG of not taking action when Channels TV aired some incendiary comments made by the Miyetti Allah.

Others also cited instances when the government failed to take action over statements capable of inciting unrest.

Equally important, 1st News has put together a few reactions below; including that of a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.
