Verified Conversations and Inside Plateau, in collaboration with the Plateau State Ministry of Information and Communication, are set to host a Democracy 2027 Town Hall Meeting on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Crispan Hotel in Jos.
The event, scheduled to commence at 12:00 p.m., will bring together journalists, policymakers, civil society organizations, youth groups, government officials, and members of the public to discuss issues surrounding Nigeria’s democratic journey and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made during a media briefing with journalists, where organizers emphasized the need for sustained civic engagement, inclusive dialogue, and active citizen participation in strengthening democratic governance in Plateau State and Nigeria.
Speaking at the briefing, the Convener of Verified Conversations, Samson Omale, said the initiative builds on the success of the group’s 2021 #2023Conversations project, which sought to engage citizens in the leadership recruitment process ahead of the 2023 elections.
According to Omale, the Democracy 2027 Town Hall aims to move political discussions beyond election campaigns by focusing on accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in governance.
He explained that the theme of this year’s engagement, “Politics Beyond Elections,” is designed to create a platform where citizens can directly engage public office holders, ask questions, and assess government performance through social accountability mechanisms.
Omale expressed confidence that the event would attract widespread participation, noting that several major radio stations have partnered with the organizers to ensure extensive coverage and audience engagement across Plateau State and beyond.
Also speaking, the Business Manager of Inside Plateau, Munta Phikwallayan, said the media platform is committed to documenting, showcasing, and promoting the positive stories and unique identity of Plateau State.
She noted that while negative narratives often dominate media coverage, many inspiring and untold stories from the state deserve greater visibility. According to her, Inside Plateau provides a platform for residents to tell their own stories and present a balanced perspective of the state.
Phikwallayan said the partnership with Verified Conversations reflects a shared commitment to fostering dialogue, bringing diverse stakeholders together, and creating opportunities for citizens to contribute meaningfully to discussions on governance and development.
The organizers said the town hall is expected to serve as a platform for constructive conversations on democracy, leadership, accountability, and citizen participation as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle.
