The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations made by a former soldier, ex-Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan, who claimed that personnel are required to purchase their own uniforms and protective gear such as bulletproof vests and helmets.

Responding to the widely circulated claims across social media and news platforms, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety, and operational readiness of its troops.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, emphasized that supplying uniforms, weapons, ammunition, and other operational equipment is a core institutional responsibility handled through established logistics systems.

She explained that dedicated ordnance units manage the procurement, storage, and distribution of these materials to ensure soldiers are properly equipped. While some personnel may choose to acquire additional items for personal comfort, she noted that such decisions are voluntary and do not reflect any systemic shortcomings.

Anele described claims that troops operate without protective gear as false and irresponsible, warning that such narratives could erode public trust and damage troop morale.

She urged the public to ignore what she termed “baseless allegations” aimed at misleading people and creating unnecessary sympathy. According to her, no soldier is deployed without the required protective equipment, and suggestions that such gear is only issued during ceremonial occasions are deliberate distortions.

Reiterating the Army’s dedication to discipline, accountability, and personnel welfare, Anele stated that deployment and posting decisions are strictly guided by operational needs.

She also cautioned against spreading unverified information that could undermine national security efforts and advised the media to rely on credible official sources.

Addressing Olamilekan’s dismissal, Anele clarified that it was not related to expressing opinions but was the result of repeated and serious acts of indiscipline, including breaches of the Armed Forces Social Media Policy. She noted that his removal followed due process in accordance with military regulations.

On the issue of pay, Anele highlighted that the Army operates a transparent salary structure based on rank and years of service, as outlined in the Manual of Financial Administration for Armed Forces of Nigeria (MAFA). In addition to monthly salaries, soldiers receive uniform allowances and other benefits paid directly into their accounts.

She added that personnel deployed for operations or assigned duties outside their units are entitled to additional allowances, including Ration Cash Allowance and Habit Allowance, along with free feeding arrangements.

Troops serving in operational areas such as Operation HADIN KAI in the North-East also receive mission-specific allowances and other entitlements aimed at supporting their welfare and enhancing effectiveness.

Anele concluded that portraying soldiers as receiving only basic salaries without additional support is inaccurate and misleading, reaffirming the Army’s ongoing commitment to both national security and the well-being of its personnel.
