INEC Fixes June 20 for Bye-Elections, Strengthens Training Ahead of Ekiti, Osun Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections across six states, while also intensifying preparations for upcoming governorship elections through enhanced training reforms.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed the date on Thursday in Abuja during the formal reception of a newly sworn-in National Commissioner, Jamila Malafa. He noted that the bye-elections would be held simultaneously with the Ekiti State Governorship Election.

According to him, the exercise will fill vacant senatorial seats in Enugu State, Nasarawa State, Rivers State, and Ondo State, alongside a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State and a House of Representatives seat in Kano State.

Amupitan described Malafa as a seasoned professional with extensive experience in both military and electoral operations, emphasizing her previous contributions to logistics within INEC and her legal expertise from service in the Nigerian Navy. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to delivering credible and transparent elections nationwide.

In her remarks, Malafa expressed gratitude for the warm reception and pledged to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic processes and ensuring successful elections.

Meanwhile, INEC has deepened its electoral training reforms with a two-day Post-Election Training Audit (PETA) and Pre-Training Assessment (PRETA) workshop held in Abuja, as part of preparations for the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

The workshop, organized by The Electoral Institute (TEI), reviewed training conducted during the 2025 Anambra Governorship Election and the 2026 FCT Area Council polls.

Acting Director-General of TEI, Ibrahim Sani, stressed that the credibility of elections largely depends on the competence of poll workers. He warned that inadequate training could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Other officials, including Nasiru Umar and Helen Ajayi, emphasized the need for critical evaluation of past training exercises to address gaps and improve future performance.

Also speaking, Binta Kasim Mohammed highlighted that the audit covers key aspects such as recruitment, logistics, stakeholder engagement, and election-day performance of ad hoc staff.

INEC said the combined PETA and PRETA initiative reflects its commitment to institutional learning and continuous improvement, expressing confidence that the exercise will strengthen its capacity to deliver free, fair, and inclusive elections across the country.

Fuel Prices, Inflation Bite Harder as Civil Society, Labour Seek Immediate Government Action

Civil society organisations and organised labour have issued a strong communiqué calling for urgent reforms to address Nigeria’s worsening energy crisis, following a strategic roundtable held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Crispan Hotel in Jos.

The roundtable, convened by Equity International and CYPA Africa in partnership with organised labour, brought together stakeholders across policy, industry, and development sectors to examine the rising cost of energy and its far-reaching impact on Nigerians.

In the communiqué released at the end of the meeting, participants identified structural governance failures, weak regulatory systems, policy inconsistencies, exchange rate instability, and infrastructure deficits as the primary drivers of the country’s persistent energy challenges. While acknowledging the influence of global geopolitical tensions on oil prices, the stakeholders stressed that Nigeria’s crisis is largely homegrown.

They described as alarming the paradox of a major crude oil-producing nation battling unaffordable fuel prices, rising transportation costs, and deepening economic hardship. According to the communiqué, the increasing cost of energy has become a major driver of inflation, significantly affecting food prices, production costs, and the survival of small and medium-scale enterprises.

The forum emphasised that energy should not be treated merely as a market commodity but as a fundamental economic and social necessity tied directly to livelihoods, productivity, and national development. Participants warned that stagnant incomes amid rising costs are worsening poverty levels and weakening citizens’ purchasing power.

The communiqué further raised concerns that despite subsidy removal and market liberalisation, Nigeria has yet to achieve a transparent and competitive energy market, with lingering questions around pricing systems, crude allocation, and regulatory oversight.

To address these issues, stakeholders outlined key recommendations including improving transparency in the petroleum value chain, cushioning the impact of rising energy costs on citizens and businesses, investing in public transportation, and strengthening domestic refining capacity through rehabilitation of refineries and support for modular refinery development.

They also called for exchange rate stability, tax relief for affected sectors, stricter market regulation, and the reactivation of depot systems to improve distribution nationwide.

During the dialogue, in their remarks, Amb. Chris Iyama of CYPA Africa attributed the crisis to global oil market volatility and domestic inefficiencies, stressing the urgency of practical, solution-driven engagement.

Gad Shamaki, a university academic, described the situation as a governance and social challenge, urging both government and citizens to take responsibility.

Labour representative James Ugochukwu highlighted inconsistencies in fuel pricing across regions and questioned why Nigeria’s costs remain unstable despite being an oil-producing nation.

Kenneth Shama of organised labour linked rising energy costs to insecurity and poverty, advocating for hardship allowances and fiscal relief for workers and businesses.

Concluding, the stakeholders reaffirmed that Nigeria’s energy crisis is not only an economic issue but also a governance and social justice concern, pledging sustained advocacy and engagement toward transparent, people-centred reforms that prioritise citizens’ welfare and economic resilience.

The Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, security, and community development following a series of condolence visits to bereaved families and traditional institutions across the council area.

During a visit to the residence of the late District Head of Kwallak, Ponzhi Kwallak, Patrick Vongtim, Chairman Tyem sympathized with the family, the Tarok Traditional Council, and the entire Kwallak community over the tragic death of the revered traditional ruler, who was reportedly killed during a violent robbery attack.

The Chairman conveyed the condolences of Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, describing the incident as a painful and unfortunate loss not only to Kwallak but to the entire Langtang North Local Government. He condemned the attack, stressing that criminality must not be allowed to thrive in a society built on strong cultural and moral values.

Hon. Tyem called on residents to remain calm and peaceful as burial arrangements continue, urging the community to honour the late traditional ruler with dignity. He noted that while death is inevitable, the violent circumstances surrounding the monarch’s passing remain deeply disturbing.

Addressing the rising wave of insecurity, the Chairman linked the trend to the gradual erosion of societal values and family discipline. He appealed to parents, community leaders, and all stakeholders to play active roles in mentoring young people and steering them away from criminal activities.

He further assured residents of his administration’s readiness to intensify collaboration with traditional institutions and security agencies. According to him, plans are underway to strengthen security architecture in the area, including the possible deployment of joint patrol teams to protect lives and property.

Responding on behalf of the Tarok Traditional Council, the Acting Ponzhi Tarok, Ponzhi Zinni Nimnan Langnim, commended the Chairman for his prompt intervention and leadership during the difficult period. He described the incident as a wake-up call for communities to address the growing breakdown of family values and social discipline.

Community stakeholders, including hotel operators and commercial motorcycle riders, were equally advised to remain vigilant and avoid providing safe havens for criminal elements.

The Councillor representing Kwallak Ward, Hon. Yilkur Isa, appreciated Governor Mutfwang, Chairman Tyem, and the traditional council for standing with the community during its moment of grief. He strongly condemned the killing and called for sustained efforts to improve security in the area.

BDC Demands Declaration of Mahanga as Terrorist Enclave, Urges Urgent Resettlement of Displaced Berom Communities

The Berom Diaspora Coalition (BDC), alongside allied groups, has called on the Federal Government to declare Mahanga in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State a terrorist hideout, describing it as a major stronghold for armed groups allegedly responsible for persistent attacks across the state.

Speaking during a press conference held in Jos on April 28, 2026, under the theme “Reclaiming Our Lost Ancestral Lands and Resettlement of Our People,” Representing the coalition, Barnabas Dazi expressed deep concern over continued violence, displacement, and humanitarian crises affecting Berom communities.

The group alleged that hundreds of lives have been lost between November 2025 and April 2026, with several communities in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Bokkos, and Bassa Local Government Areas repeatedly attacked. According to the coalition, more than 70 Berom villages have been displaced, with some reportedly occupied by armed groups.

A key demand highlighted during the briefing was the urgent designation of Mahanga as a terrorist enclave. The coalition argued that such a move would enable security agencies to carry out decisive operations to dismantle what it described as a long-standing base for violent attacks.

Beyond security measures, the BDC emphasized the urgent need for the reclamation of ancestral lands and the safe resettlement of displaced persons. It criticized the slow pace of government intervention, noting that many affected families remain homeless while their lands are allegedly occupied.

The coalition urged both the Federal and Plateau State governments to move beyond assurances and take immediate action to restore displaced communities to their original homes. It also called for stronger prosecution of suspects linked to attacks and compensation for victims.

Reaffirming its stance, the group appealed to the international community and human rights organizations to intervene and help end the violence, stressing that the protection of lives and restoration of ancestral lands must remain a priority.

Plateau Marks World Malaria Day, Records Sharp Decline in Malaria Prevalence

The Plateau State Government, in collaboration with Plateau State Malaria Elimination Program (SMEP), development partners,  stakeholders, on Saturday commemorated the 2026 World Malaria Day 2026 with a call for sustained action to eliminate malaria across the state and Nigeria.

The event, held at Crystal Hall, Crispan Suites in Jos, was themed “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must,” with the slogan “Let’s Do It.” Activities began with a sensitization health walk from Air Force Roundabout to the venue, aimed at raising public awareness on malaria prevention.

The ceremony attracted key stakeholders,  including development partners, State Malaria Elimination Programme officers, healthcare workers, students of health institutions, and officials from the Plateau State Ministry of Health.

Representing the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Ngo Josephine Piyo, Dr. Benjamin Garkuwa Sumi described the day as an opportunity to reflect on progress made and reinforce commitment to ending malaria, a disease he noted remains a major public health burden in Nigeria.

According to him, Nigeria accounts for nearly a quarter of global malaria cases and deaths, with an estimated nine to ten deaths occurring every hour due to malaria-related complications. Despite this, he highlighted significant progress, noting that malaria prevalence in the country has declined over the years, while Plateau State has recorded even more remarkable gains.

He disclosed that malaria prevalence in Plateau dropped from 18.8 percent in 2021 to 2.8 percent in 2025, attributing the success to coordinated efforts by the State Ministry of Health and the State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP), supported by development partners.

Dr. Sumi also cited achievements in key interventions, including over 100 percent coverage during the 2024 and 2025 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaigns and a 96 percent success rate in the 2024 Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) distribution campaign. He added that malaria commodities such as rapid diagnostic kits and treatment drugs are currently being supplied to over 400 health facilities across the state.

He urged residents to adopt preventive measures, including consistent use of treated mosquito nets, environmental sanitation, early testing, and proper antenatal care for pregnant women.

In his remarks, the Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, commended stakeholders and partners for their roles in reducing malaria prevalence in the state. He emphasized the importance of environmental sanitation, noting that recent sensitization campaigns and clean-up exercises were part of broader efforts to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Baamlong expressed optimism that Plateau could achieve near-zero malaria prevalence in the coming years if collective efforts are sustained, adding that the state currently ranks among those with the lowest malaria burden in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Program Manager of the State Malaria Elimination Programme, Nurse Kizito Ndak, described the celebration as both a milestone and a strategic platform to evaluate progress and chart the way forward.

He credited the reduction in malaria prevalence to interventions by partners such as the Malaria Consortium and other global health initiatives, as well as increased public awareness driven by media campaigns and community outreach activities.

Ndak stressed the need for continued adherence to preventive practices, including maintaining clean environments, eliminating stagnant water, sleeping under treated nets, and seeking prompt medical testing and treatment.

In his keynote address, Dr. Elijah Otopka described malaria as one of the deadliest mosquito-borne diseases globally, noting that Africa accounts for about 95% of deaths, with Nigeria bearing a major burden. He said the campaign against malaria is not just a celebration but a call to urgent action.

Dr Otopka highlighted major progress in Plateau State, where malaria prevalence dropped from 18.8% in 2021 to 2.8% in 2025. He attributed this success to interventions such as insecticide-treated nets, seasonal malaria prevention, rapid testing, and improved treatment services.

He called for increased domestic funding, stronger health systems, and investment in research and innovation. He urged all stakeholders to work together, saying, “We have the tools, the knowledge, and the political will—now we must end malaria.”

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Malaria Consortium, Dr. Mbwas Mashor reiterated that while progress has been made, sustained commitment is necessary to prevent a resurgence of the disease. He noted that over one million children in Plateau have benefited annually from preventive malaria treatments under the SMC programme.

He called on government, policymakers, communities, and partners to strengthen investments and adopt data-driven strategies to accelerate malaria elimination.

Similarly, a representative of the World Health Organization, Muoghah Abere Favour, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Plateau State and Nigeria in combating malaria. She emphasized prevention through the use of treated nets, timely access to treatment, and improved environmental hygiene.

Stakeholders at the event unanimously agreed that while the gains recorded are significant, sustained collaboration and public participation remain critical to achieving a malaria-free Plateau State and Nigeria.
