Tinubu Sacks Kyari As NNPC GCEO, Dissolves Board; Appoints Replacements

President Bola Tinubu, in a sweeping reconstitution of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Limited board, has sacked the Group Chief Executive Officer, GCEO, Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, and the board chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

President Tinubu also removed all other board members appointed with Akinyelure and Kyari in November 2023.

This was made public via a statement issued in the early hours of Wednesday by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the new 11-man board has Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group CEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.

The statement further stated that Adedapo Segun, who replaced Umaru Isa Ajiya as the chief financial officer last November, has been appointed to the new board by President Tinubu.

Six board members, non-executive directors, represent the country’s geopolitical zones. They are Bello Rabiu, North West; Yusuf Usman, North East; and Babs Omotowa, a former managing director of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), who represents North Central.

President Tinubu appointed Austin Avuru as a non-executive director from the South-South, David Ige as a non-executive director from the South-West, and Henry Obih as a non-executive director from the South-East.

Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, will represent the ministry on the new board, while Aminu Said Ahmed will represent the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Continuing, the statement said, “All the appointments are effective today, April 2.

“President Tinubu, invoking the powers granted under Section 59, subsection 2 of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, emphasised that the board’s restructuring is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, restoring investor confidence, boosting local content, driving economic growth, and advancing gas commercialisation and diversification.

“President Tinubu also handed out an immediate action plan to the new board: to conduct a strategic portfolio review of NNPC-operated and joint venture assets to ensure alignment with value maximisation objectives.

“Since 2023, the Tinubu administration has implemented oil sector reforms to attract investment. Last year, NNPC reported $17 billion in new investments within the sector. The administration now envisions increasing the investment to $30 billion by 2027 and $60 billion by 2030.

“The Tinubu administration targets raising oil production to two million barrels daily by 2027 and three million daily by 2030. Concurrently, the government wants gas production jacked to 8 billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 10 billion cubic feet by 2030.

“Furthermore, President Tinubu expects the new board to elevate NNPC’s share of crude oil refining output to 200,000 barrels by 2027 and reach 500,000 by 2030.

“The new board chairman, Ahmadu Musa Kida, is from Borno State. He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he received a degree in civil engineering in 1984. He also obtained a postgraduate diploma in petroleum engineering from the Institut Francaise du Petrol (IFP) in Paris.

“He started his career in the oil industry at Elf Petroleum Nigeria and later joined Total Exploration and Production as a trainee engineer in 1985.

“Musa became Total Nigeria’s Deputy Managing Director of Deep Water Services in 2015. Last year, he became an Independent Non-Executive Director at Pan Ocean-Newcross Group.

“Apart from his oil industry career, Ahmadu Musa Kida is a former basketballer and the president of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) board.

“Ojulari, the new NNPC Limited Group CEO, hails from Kwara State. Until his new appointment, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company. His renaissance recently led a consortium of indigenous energy firms in the landmark acquisition of the entire equity holding in the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), worth $2.4 billion.

“Like Kida, Ojulari is also an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for Elf Aquitaine as the first Nigerian process engineer to begin a stellar career in the oil sector. From Elf, he joined Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd in 1991 as an associate production technologist.

“Apart from working in Nigeria, he worked in Europe and the Middle East in different capacities as a petroleum process and production engineer, strategic planner, field developer, and asset manager. In 2015, he became the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

“During his career, he was chairman and a member of the board of trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE Nigerian Council) and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

“President Tinubu thanked the old board members for their dedicated service to NNPC Limited, particularly their efforts in rehabilitating the old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which enabled them to resume petroleum product production after prolonged shutdowns. He wished them well in their future endeavours.”

Mixed Reactions Trail Bill To Stop Tinubu, Obi, Atiku, Others From Contesting

A bill currently on the floor of the House of Representatives, seeking to stop anyone above 60 years from vying for election to the offices of the Nigerian President and State Governor has triggered controversy.

Reports has it that the bill, sponsored by Imo lawmaker, Ikenga Ugochinyere was passed for second reading at the lower legislative chamber on Thursday.

If the bill scales through legislative scrutiny and is signed into law, the majority of the 2027 presidential hopefuls, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, will be missing.

This is because they are all over 60 years.

Titled “A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to review the requirements that qualify a person to be elected as President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Governors and Deputy Governor of a State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for Related Matters”, was one of the 31 proposed legislations which scaled second reading during Thursday’s plenary session.

The bill provides that “A person shall be qualified for election to the office of the President if he has been educated up to at least university level and has earned a Bachelor’s degree in his chosen field of study.

“Section 131 of the Principal Act is amended by inserting a paragraph which reads, “That he is not more than 60 years at the time of vying for the Office of President.

“Section 177(d) of the principal Act is amended by altering the educational requirement that qualifies persons to be elected as governor as follows:

“A person shall be qualified for election to the Office of the President if he has been educated up to at least university level and has earned a Bachelor’s degree in his chosen field of study.

“That he is not more than 60 years old at the time of vying for the office of Governor.”

While the bill was spontaneously accepted by Nigerian youths, who feel they have been marginalized for years, others rejected the move.

Plateau Man of The Year Awards Rejoinder To Allegations By a Former Volunteer – Ogwuche Susan (aka Mhiz Suzking)

PLATEAU MAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS REJOINDER TO ALLEGATIONS BY A FORMER VOLUNTEER – MISS OGWUCHE SUSAN (aka MHIZ SUZKING)

The organizers of the Plateau Man of the Year Awards (PMYA) have taken note of the misleading and unfounded allegations made by Miss Ogwuche Susan (aka Mhiz Suzking), a former volunteer who worked with our team during the 2024 legendary edition of our events. We are compelled to respond to these allegations in order to set the record straight and protect the integrity of the Awards platform, and that of our respectful convener, Ambassador Cletus Akhimien.

First and foremost, we want to acknowledge the contributions of Miss Ogwuche Susan during her time as a volunteer for a three weeks period with our organisation. Her efforts were appreciated, and we are grateful for the time she dedicated to supporting our event.
However, we take great exception to the malicious and unfounded allegations she has made against our convener, Ambassador Cletus Akhimien. These allegations are not only false but also damaging to the reputation of our organisation and its leadership.

We want to state categorically that Amb. Akhimien is a man of impeccable character. He has dedicated his life to promoting excellence and progress in Plateau State, and his commitment to this vision is unwavering. The Plateau Man of the Year Award is a testament to his vision and leadership, and we are proud of the impact it has made in recognising and celebrating leaders and innovators in Plateau State.
For the avoidance of doubt, the Plateau Man of the Year Awards was established with a clear vision to honour leaders and innovators driving excellence and progress in Plateau State. Over the years, this prestigious platform has recognized and celebrated outstanding individuals who have contributed significantly to the socio-economic and cultural development of Plateau State and beyond. The awards have maintained a strong reputation for credibility, transparency, and impact, a legacy we remain committed to upholding.

Regarding the Claims by Miss Ogwuche Susan:

  1. Volunteer Engagement & Appreciation
We want to correct the false narrative that Miss Ogwuche Susan has created around her involvement with our organisation thus:
  • Miss Susan was one of several volunteers who contributed to the success of the 2024 edition of the awards. We deeply appreciate the efforts of all volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. While she was indeed a volunteer, her role was not as exaggerated as she has claimed. We have records of all our volunteers and their contributions, and we can confidently say that her claims are grossly overstated. Recall she served for a maximum period of three weeks.
  • However, it is unfortunate that she has chosen to misrepresent her role and make baseless accusations against the convener after her participation forgetting she willingly offered to serve as a volunteer and not the other way round.
  1. False Claims of Exploitation
  • The allegation that the convener “uses people and discards them” is entirely false and malicious. Ambassador Cletus Akhimien is a man who values every individual who contributes to the success of PMYA.
  • All volunteers, including Miss Susan, were duly acknowledged for their roles, and we maintain an open-door policy for feedback and engagement. Drawing from the adage that who alleges must prove, we will get the necessary law enforcement agencies to substantiate this claim or otherwise.
  1. Misrepresentation of Facts
Furthermore, we are disappointed that Miss Ogwuche Susan has chosen to make these allegations after her refusal to attend the teams close out review meeting where each volunteer give account of his or her role and is duly appreciated. However, despite going the route she chooses on the social media, forgetting she did not volunteer through the social media, she was duly appreciated and compensated for her efforts. We have records of all our transactions, including payments made to her, and we can confidently say that she was treated fairly and with respect. Till date she is yet to submit a formal account of her engagement and activities aside the rant on social media.
  • Miss Susan’s claims suggest a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the awards and the convener. It is important to clarify that she was introduced to the 2024 team by one of its member, and her involvement was strictly voluntary a fact she was fully aware of from the outset. She lobbied to serve as a volunteer and this is what we get in return.
  • At no point was there any agreement or promise of financial compensation, as her role was purely voluntary, like every other team member who believed in the vision of PMYA.
  1. Demand for Accountability
  • If Miss Susan has any legitimate concerns, we encourage her to engage through proper channels rather than resorting to public disparagement. The organizers remain open to constructive dialogue but will not condone deliberate attempts to malign the reputation of the awards or its convener. It is therefore to forestall a future reoccurrence that we have briefed our legal team to do the needful so the records can be straightened.

Our Commitment to Excellence:
The Plateau Man of the Year Awards remains dedicated to its mission of celebrating excellence and fostering positive change in Plateau State. We will not be distracted by unfounded allegations but will continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity in recognizing deserving leaders and change-makers.

In conclusion, we want to assure the public that the Plateau Man of the Year Award is committed to its vision of honouring leaders and innovators who are driving excellence and progress in Plateau State. We will not be distracted by malicious allegations, false narratives and the activities of fifth columnist bent on destroying anything good on the Plateau. We will continue to work tirelessly to promote excellence and progress in Plateau State, and we invite all well-meaning individuals to join us in this noble endeavour.

We urge the public to disregard these misleading claims and reaffirm our gratitude to all past and present volunteers, partners, and awardees who have contributed to the success of this noble initiative.

Signed,
The Organizing Committee
Plateau Man of the Year Awards

Strengthening Primary Healthcare

As part of broader efforts to improve healthcare services, Governor Mutfwang announced that contracts have been awarded for the renovation and re-equipment of 82 primary healthcare centers across Plateau State, with at least four facilities per local government area undergoing significant upgrades. The renovations include the provision of fencing, motorized boreholes, solar power installations, and two-bedroom staff quarters to ensure round-the-clock availability of medical personnel.

Speaking to journalists, Nurse Kizito Ndak, Project Manager of the IMPACT initiative in Plateau State, emphasized the importance of the project in addressing key healthcare challenges. He explained that the availability of Safe Delivery Kits would encourage more women to seek professional medical care during childbirth, reducing cases of home deliveries and complications arising from unassisted births.

Our goal is to prevent maternal and infant deaths by ensuring that all expectant mothers give birth in well-equipped healthcare facilities,” Ndak stated.

PSIRS Applauds Taxpayers as Plateau Revenue Grows to ₦31.14 Billion

The Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), Mr. Jim Pam Wayas, has commended the taxpayers of Plateau State for their contributions to the revenue growth.

During the Taxpayers Month celebration in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area, Mr. Wayas expressed his appreciation to compliant taxpayers for their contribution to the state’s revenue growth. “We are here at the Jos South headquarters to honor our many taxpayers, especially those who have remained compliant, and to extend our gratitude,” he stated.

In 2024, Plateau State recorded significant growth in its revenue collection, moving from ₦25 billion to ₦31.14 billion. Mr. Wayas attributed this achievement to the dedication of taxpayers who remained compliant. “The growth has moved from ₦25 billion to ₦31.14 billion, and the only way we can give back to our taxpayers is to tell them thank you,” he added.

As part of the Taxpayers Month celebrations, the PSIRS organized various activities, including entertainment by Dantala and group, the registration of Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), sensitization on the importance of paying taxes, and distribution of hampers to attendees. The Chairman emphasized the need to appreciate taxpayers for their contribution to Plateau State’s development.

One of the key organizations honored during the event was the National Electricity Supply Company (NESCO), which has been providing electricity in Plateau State for over 100 years. “NESCO has been providing electricity, especially in the rural areas where mining activities happen, and they are one of the most tax-compliant agencies,” Mr. Wayas stated.

Mr. Wayas also commended NESCO for its dedication to maintaining its machinery, which has allowed the company to remain a significant contributor to the state’s revenue. “We come here to honor them and tell them that more is expected from them in 2025,” he remarked.

In addition to recognizing NESCO, Mr. Wayas mentioned that other compliant taxpayers would be acknowledged through social media, print, and broadcast media. “We will make sure that we propagate the good news of what they have been doing and their contributions to the growth of Plateau State,” he said.

Mr. Wayas assured the public that the PSIRS would continue to collect revenue to support government projects, particularly critical infrastructure. “What we do is collect revenue to help the government fund critical projects or infrastructure,” he explained.

Furthermore, Mr. Wayas discussed improvements in Plateau’s water supply, mentioning significant investments in the water project. “There is a huge paradigm shift for our water, and the water board is getting a new lift to address issues of water scarcity,” he said. He reaffirming the government’s dedication to using available resources to bring about positive change in Plateau State.

In response, Mr. Abraham Adama, the Human Resource and Administration Manager of NESCO, acknowledged the recognition given to the company for its longstanding contributions. He noted that NESCO’s over 100-year-old machinery continues to operate at 80% capacity. “I tell you the truth, that some of these machines that are about 100 years old are still generating up to 80% capacity to date,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Adama remained hopeful for improved partnerships with the government and other stakeholders. He emphasized that with better collaboration, NESCO could reach new heights. “With people like you for the government of the day, we also believe that we’re going to see some great improvement in terms of the partnership,” he stated.

Economy Hardship: Stick To One Wife – Emir Of Zazzau Advises Muslim

The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has advised men facing financial challenges to limit themselves to one wife in order to better provide for and nurture responsible families.

He expressed concern over the negative impact of polygamy, noting that many family leaders are failing to fulfill their obligations.

During his address at the closing of the 30th annual Ramadan lecture of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), the Emir emphasized that while Islam permits men to marry more than one woman, this right does not necessarily mean that every man is financially capable of supporting multiple families.

He shared an example from his palace, where 192 families reside, with some men having more than 50 children. “How can someone adequately care for such a large number of dependents?” he questioned.

The Emir also called for changes in the Islamiyya education system to better incorporate teachings on the rights of girls. He believes this shift could lead to more progressive communities

Further, he criticized the judiciary for aggravating societal issues, pointing to the case of a young woman sentenced to two years in prison over a small debt of N6,000. “When I visited the prison, I had only N200,000, yet I was able to secure the release of eight people,” he recounted.

The Emir noted that the palace frequently relies on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods to address challenges in areas such as marriage, inheritance, and land disputes, which he described as major sources of family strife.

In her remarks, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, the deputy governor of Kaduna State, called on the Ulama to motivate men to take greater responsibility in their homes.

She emphasized that many responsibilities have shifted to women, and it’s time for men to step up.

Meanwhile, Hajiya Nafisa Isah, the Amirah of FOMWAN Kaduna State, announced that the organization is working on establishing a fully operational skills acquisition center to empower both women and youth.
