FG Reaffirms Commitment to Paying Delayed N77,000 Corps Members’ Allowance

The federal government has reassured corps members that they will receive the backlog of their delayed N77,000 monthly allowance.

The stipend increase, announced on September 25, 2024, raised corps members’ pay from N33,000 to N77,000, effective from July 2024. However, implementation has been delayed despite multiple assurances.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reiterated the government’s promise on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He confirmed that serving corps members and those still in the scheme when the increment was announced would receive backdated payments.

“You saw the new DG saying that you will get it… We have your details,” Olawande stated. He emphasized that while payment may take some time, it remains a priority for the government.

This assurance follows recent comments by the NYSC’s new Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, who announced that the new allowance is expected to take effect in March.

Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Moves to Disbar Senate Ethics Committee Chair

The embattled senator for Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has taken legal action against the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, Senator Nedamwem Imasuen, seeking his disbarment from the legal profession in Nigeria.

Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a petition before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), alleging that Imasuen was previously disbarred in the United States for professional misconduct. According to the petition, the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, had on May 10, 2010, indicted and debarred Imasuen over fraud, misappropriation of client funds, and failure to respond to disciplinary authorities.

To support her claims, Akpoti-Uduaghan submitted a copy of the 2010 Justia New York Case Law titled Matter of Imasuen and vowed to present further official records at the trial. She alleged that Imasuen was disbarred following a complaint from a former client, Daphne Slyfield, who accused him of abandoning her case despite receiving substantial legal fees.

The senator further claimed that after losing his legal license in the U.S., Imasuen relocated to Nigeria, continued presenting himself as a legal practitioner, and entered politics, eventually securing a Senate seat representing Edo South. She also argued that he failed to disclose his disbarment when contesting for public office and later assumed the leadership of the Senate Ethics Committee—a role that demands the highest level of integrity.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition comes amid tensions between the two senators, following her six-month suspension from the Senate, a decision overseen by Imasuen’s committee. She accused him of disregarding a Federal High Court order that restrained the committee from proceeding with disciplinary actions against her.

As the LPDC reviews the petition, the case is expected to spark debates on ethical standards in the Senate and the integrity of public officeholders in Nigeria.

Labour Unions Threaten Nationwide Disruption Over Emergency Rule in Rivers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State have vowed to take decisive actions that could disrupt economic activities across the country if President Bola Tinubu does not revoke the emergency rule imposed on the state.

In a joint statement, the unions condemned the federal government’s decision, stating that it has negatively impacted workers by halting salary payments.

President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18 following political unrest in the oil-rich region. The move led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. Retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the state’s sole administrator.

Labour leaders warned that if the situation is not addressed swiftly, they will embark on nationwide protests and industrial action to safeguard workers’ rights and democratic governance.

Long Goemai Praises Shendam LG Chairman, Hon. Nshe, for Launching Solar Project to Tackle Electricity Shortage

The Long Goemai of the Goemai Nation His Royal Highness Miskoom Martin Shaldas III has commended the Executive Chairman of Shendam Local Government Council Hon. Dr. Nicholas Kemi Nshe for initiating a solar project aimed at addressing the electricity challenge in the local government.

He applauded Nshe’s commitment to improving the lives of Shendam’s residents through innovative solutions.

Speaking at his Palace in Shendam when the Council Chairman lead the General Manager, Virtuitis Solaris Limited Ayodeji Oladeji to paid him courtesy to informed of the solar Project in Shendam, describing it as a much-needed solution to the area’s electricity challenges.

He commended the local government chairman for prioritizing the needs of the people and ensuring that the long-standing issue of power supply was being addressed.

He urged Virtuitis Solaris Limited to ensure the project’s swift implementation while calling for community support and awareness to maximize its impact.

According to the Traditional Ruler, reliable electricity would not only improve living conditions but also boost small businesses, creating economic opportunities for the people of Shendam.

It would be recalled that after more than a decade in darkness, Shendam Local Government is set to regain electricity with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a solar energy project which Installations are already underway, marking a major step toward restoring power to the community.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Chairman of Shendam LGA, Hon. Nicholas Kemi Nshe, described the situation as unacceptable, recalling a time when stable electricity was a norm. He lamented the irony of struggling with power in an era of technological advancement.

“There’s no one who needs to inform me about this issue. When we were growing up, electricity was constant. Even in school, after prep, we would return to our hostels, heat our water, and have our meals before bed without worrying about power. Light was free and available,” he said.

“But today, in the 21st century—an era of technological advancement—we are still struggling with something as basic as electricity. Naturally, we should have power without question, yet here we are, with a local government headquarters that has been in darkness for 12 years. That is nothing short of a crisis.”

Nshe stressed that the absence of electricity had forced many businesses to shut down or relocate, dealing a major blow to economic growth.

He emphasized that power supply was just as fundamental to development as roads, markets, and raw materials.

While handing over the MOU and the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the project, Nshe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the solar energy initiative.

He noted that efforts to restore electricity had gone beyond Plateau State, with engagements in Abuja and Lagos to secure the project.

“If people in rural areas struggle to afford two meals a day yet still manage to pay for solar power, then surely, we in the township should embrace this opportunity. This is why we have gone the extra mile, traveling not just within Plateau but to Abuja and Lagos, pushing to make this project a reality. Since August last year, we have worked tirelessly, and today, by the grace of God, we are seeing results,” he explained.

He expressed concerns about the long delay in restoring electricity, he assured residents that change was happening and called for community support to sustain the project.

“The traditional ruler rightly pointed out that four months is not enough to address years of neglect. People leave their villages for towns, expecting better conditions, not darkness. Over 130,000 people live here, and keeping them in the dark is unacceptable. Development has been long overdue, and we are committed to making a difference,” he assured.

The General Manager Virtuitis Solaris Limited, a Sister company of Mojec international Holdings Mr Ayodeji Oladeji, while Speaking at the Palace and during the handing of land documents for her projects assured the traditional ruler and people of Shendam that the solar project would provide a sustainable, affordable, and reliable power supply.

He emphasized that access to electricity was a fundamental right, not a luxury, and that the project was designed to put power directly in the hands of the people.

Oladeji explained that a feasibility study had confirmed the viability of the project and that Shendam had been divided into four zones, each expected to receive one megawatt of power.

“We are starting the first phase with one megawatt, covering major areas within the town. As of today, 20 percent of the required equipment for this phase has already been deployed,” he revealed.

He also assured residents that every household would receive a prepaid meter at no cost, eliminating cases of estimated billing and unfair charges.

“We do not take a single naira from anybody, and we will not ask for payment to install these meters. We have estimated the number of meters required and will provide them. There will be no cases of low supply and high charges—just a fair, transparent system where you pay only for what you use,” he stated.

However Many have view the solar project as right direction towards providing a sustainable solution to the electricity challenge in Shendam, saying by harnessing renewable energy, the local government can reduce its reliance on non-renewable energy sources and promote environmental sustainability

It recalled that Hon. Nshe has a track record of implementing projects that benefit the community, such as installing over 400 boreholes to address water scarcity issues during his earlier terms.

While many have described Hon. Nshe leadership style is inclusive, valuing the input and participation of all stakeholders, including traditional leaders, youth groups, and women’s associations.

Namibia Swears In First Female President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been sworn in as Namibia’s first female president and the country’s fifth leader.

Peter Shivute, Namibian chief justice, swore Nandi-Ndaitwah in on Friday during the nation’s 35th Independence Day ceremony at the State House.

Outgoing president Nangolo Mbumba, 83, handed over power to Nandi-Ndaitwah at the ceremony that was moved from the Independence Stadium because of rare heavy rains.

Nicknamed NNN, Nandi-Ndaitwah won the election late last year with more than 57 percent of the votes cast, with Panduleni Itula, her closest rival, getting 26 percent, according to the electoral commission.

However, Itula rejected the outcome, saying the election was “deeply flawed”.

Nandi-Ndaitwah joined SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party, at 14.

At the time, Namibia was known as South West Africa and its people were under occupation from South Africa.

The party was a liberation movement resisting South Africa’s white-minority rule at the time she joined.

Nandi-Ndaitwah would later lead SWAPO’s youth league, kicking off a successful political career as an activist.

During her high school years, Nandi-Ndaitwah was arrested and detained following a crackdown on SWAPO activists. She subsequently fled the country and continued the campaign in exile.

When Namibia gained independence in 1988, she returned and joined the SWAPO-run government.

Nandi-Ndaitwah has since held various ministerial roles including in foreign affairs, tourism, child welfare and information.

The 72-year-old has pledged to transform Namibia’s economy and unite the people after political divisions split the country.

She also promised to create jobs in key sectors like agriculture, fishing and the creative and sports industries.

Speaking during the inauguration, Tanzanian President Samia Hassan said Namibia is making history by swearing in a female president in Africa.

Hassan, who is also her country’s first female leader, thanked Nandi-Ndaitwah for “setting the bar”.
