Fela Kuti Makes History with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction
Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has posthumously secured a historic place in global music history following his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The iconic Nigerian musician becomes the first from the country to receive the prestigious honour.
Fela was recognised in the “Early Influence” category alongside notable figures such as Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons. The announcement was made during a live broadcast of American Idol in the United States.
Also honoured is Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, who was inducted in the “Performer” category alongside global stars including Phil Collins, Billy Idol, and Iron Maiden.
Fela’s recognition comes nearly three decades after his death and follows recent global milestones celebrating African music, including the introduction of the Best African Performance category at the Grammy Awards. Earlier this year, he also became the first African artist to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where a total of 18 honourees will be celebrated across four categories.
Other inductees include Joy Division / New Order, Oasis, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan in the Performer category. The Musical Excellence Award will go to Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin, while Ed Sullivan will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
