The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, warning that organised labour may embark on a nationwide strike if urgent measures are not taken to protect citizens.

NLC President, , issued the warning on Monday while addressing delegates at the ongoing in .

Ajaero said Nigerian workers are increasingly carrying out their daily activities under the constant threat of kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes, describing the situation as unacceptable.

According to him, the safety and security of workers have become critical concerns, with many citizens leaving their homes each day uncertain of returning safely. He stressed that organised labour would not remain passive if the security crisis continues to worsen.

The labour leader noted that insecurity has negatively impacted productivity and the overall well-being of workers across various sectors, emphasizing that safeguarding lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.

In addition to security concerns, the NLC and TUC called on the Federal Government to begin preparations for a fresh renegotiation of the national minimum wage. The unions argued that rising inflation and the increasing cost of living have made a wage review imperative.

They maintained that discussions on a new wage structure should commence before the current agreement expires next year, noting that early engagement would help prevent delays and potential industrial disputes.

The labour unions reiterated their position that Nigerian workers deserve a living wage capable of meeting basic needs amid prevailing economic challenges.

Although no date has been announced for industrial action, the warning signals growing tension between organised labour and the government over security and economic issues, raising the prospect of a nationwide strike if their demands are not addressed.
