In a determined effort to ensure free, fair, and credible local government elections, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has embarked on a comprehensive tour of all 17 local government areas (LGAs) in the state. The tour, which began with visits to 10 LGAs in the southern and central zones, aims to foster collaboration with key stakeholders in the election process. The commission plans to continue this tour in the northern parts of Plateau State.
Led by PLASIEC Chairman, Hon. Daniel Plangji Cishak, the team met with stakeholders to discuss the harmonization of polling units across the 325 PLASIEC wards and the 207 INEC wards. This harmonization is crucial for ensuring a streamlined and transparent voting process. Addressing various Stakeholders, Hon. Cishak emphasized the commission’s commitment to transparency and adherence to global standards.
“We are here to assure you of a transparent election. The vote of the people of Plateau State must count, and it will no longer be business as usual,” Cishak stated. He highlighted the importance of opening up the electoral process, ensuring all registered political parties have equal opportunities to participate. “It is not enough for you to do what is right. The people should see you doing that which is right,” he added.
The tour included visits to PLASIEC offices for a needs assessment, allowing the commission to prepare adequately for the upcoming elections. This proactive approach is part of PLASIEC’s strategy to ensure all logistical and administrative aspects of the election are handled efficiently and effectively. The chairman and his team are focused on maintaining the integrity of the election process, ensuring that the true will of the people is reflected in the results.
Local government officials, including TIC Chairmen of Wase, Kanam, Langtang North, Langtang South, Mikang, Shendam, Quaanpan, Kanke, Pankshin, and Mangu, expressed their support for PLASIEC. Hon. Markus Artu, TIC Chairman of Mangu, praised the chairman for his unprecedented engagement with stakeholders, which demonstrates a commitment to transparent elections. “Being the first chairman to have this kind of engagement with stakeholders shows his readiness for a transparent election. We all pledge our full support to ensure a free, fair, and credible election,” Artu remarked.
PLASIEC’s initiative is seen as a significant step towards strengthening democratic processes in Plateau State. By actively engaging with stakeholders and addressing logistical needs, PLASIEC is setting a new standard for electoral integrity. The forthcoming local government elections are anticipated to be a model of integrity and fairness, reflecting the commission’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that every vote counts.
