The Nigerian Army celebrated its 161st anniversary with a grand finale event held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the Headquarters 3 Division Parade Ground, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, Plateau State. The week-long celebration, themed “Transforming the Nigerian Army: Imperative for Combating Contemporary Security Challenges Within a Joint Environment,” showcased the Army’s ongoing commitment to national security and community engagement.

The festivities began with Juma’at prayers and an interdenominational church service, followed by the commissioning of CIMIC projects, a free medical outreach, the NADCEL Lecture, and the award ceremony for the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Literary Competition. Additionally, the Army hosted an interactive session with media representatives and a golf tournament.

The grand finale featured a series of events, including a file pass and demonstration, COAS Honours and Awards, the presentation of souvenirs, and a tour of R&D and historical-themed exhibition stands. Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), delivered a welcome address highlighting the Army’s dedication to national security and its collaborative efforts with the community.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, praised the Nigerian Army for its unwavering commitment and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation. In his address, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s dedication to building a well-equipped and truly professional army that remains the pride of the nation.

“Over the years, the Nigerian Army has played critical roles in the security, development, and continued existence of Nigeria,” said President Tinubu. “As your Commander-in-Chief, my administration is committed to building a well-equipped and truly professional army that will remain the pride of the nation. We are committed to providing you with all that you need to enable you to fulfill your constitutional responsibilities.”

President Tinubu announced the approval of the payment of group life assurances for all members of the Nigerian Army who died in the line of duty. He also approved the purchase of attack helicopters and other necessary combat equipment to enhance the Army’s operational capabilities. Two newly acquired helicopters were officially launched during the event, symbolizing the Army’s readiness to tackle contemporary security challenges.

The Nigerian Army continues to prioritize the welfare and training of its personnel, with initiatives such as the Affordable Housing for All (AHOOAS) scheme and the disbursement of Group Life Assurance funds to families of fallen soldiers. These measures aim to improve the morale and living conditions of the troops, ensuring they are well-prepared for their mission to protect the nation.

The celebration concluded with a display of military equipment and a parade, showcasing the Nigerian Army’s strength, discipline, and professionalism. The event reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to uphold its mission of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
